Remarkable pictures are surfacing this morning after a Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800 overran the runway at Trabzon Airport in Trabzon, Turkey. The aircraft then slid down the side of the runway, stopping feet from the Black Sea.

Pegasus Airlines flight PC8622, departed from Ankara-Esenboga International Airport at 10:30 PM. After a 52-minute flight, the aircraft was on final for Trabzon Airport. Upon landing, the aircraft was unable to come to a stop on runway 11. The aircraft then slid down a steep cliff, losing one of its engines as it slid down the incline. The Boeing 737-800 stopped just feet from the Black Sea.

Miraculously, no passengers or crew were seriously injured. Of the 162 on-board, only three were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Pegasus Airlines is a Turkish low-cost carrier with an impeccable safety record. This is the airline’s second incident in nearly 30 years of operation. The flight, Pegasus PC8622, was operated by a 5-year old Boeing 737-800 bearing the registration TC-CPF.

As of 6:20 AM Central Time, it appears ice on the runway is being blamed for the runway excursion. I will update this post as more details are made available.
