If you haven’t picked up on it, I’m a bit of a ship buff. Yes, I’m living proof that one can love airplanes AND ships. Last Sunday, the SS United States was featured on CBS Sunday Morning. I thought the story was interesting….compelling…. and a little piece of me wonders what the story of this ship says about us.
Regardless of one’s politics the restoration and preservation is this vessel is something EVERY American should support. This ship is as important to Americas history as Boston’s old North Church or the Statue of Liberty. Please help make more of our nation aware of her plight and return her to a place of honor and respect.
All our grand old lady’s are left to rot or scrapped,S.O.S. save our ships.
Marshall, thanks for keeping this topic alive. Whenever I see the SS United States today I’m reminded of a once beautiful young woman who is now a frail and failing–but still beautiful–down-on-her-luck old lady. The “Big U” harkens back to the days when this country took pride in building quality things. She was remarkable in her day as well as today and deserves to survive. @Gary, thanks for your comment. She’s a beautiful ship, and it’s shameful what has happened to her.
Never knew – thanks for the post!
If you haven’t already check out http://www.cruisetalkshow.com/ this is the website for Barry. Vaudrin who is a huge fan of old cruise ships.
I’m a ship buff also, because of this ship, my father took me to the docks in NYC just to see it, in its glory, sometime in the 50s, I remember that to this day, I couldn’t have been more than 5 years old. Every time I go Philadelphia now, and see it, in it’s condition it is sad.
