Over the last few years, Amex has increased annual fees on many of their cards. While they still offer some of the best welcome bonuses on the market, the high annual fees can be a huge barrier for some before they consider a new card. However, the great thing about this card is that it lets you try for the first year for no cost whatsoever. Let’s have a look at the consumer version of the Delta SkyMiles Gold card by American Express.

Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Credit Card

The Delta SkyMiles Gold card is a starter version card for those getting accustomed with the Delta SkyMiles ecosystem. Amex also offer a business version of the card. For the purpose of this review, we’ll have a look a the the consumer version.

Delta SkyMiles Gold Card: Welcome Bonus

American Express is currently offering a limited time welcome bonus of 90,000 Delta SkyMiles. You’ll earn 70,000 miles after you spend $3,000 or more in the first 6 months. You’ll earn an additional 20,000 miles after you spend another $2,000 in the first six months.  This offer expires on July 15 2026. This welcome bonus offer should be pretty easy for most people to access as you only need to spend $834 each month.

The annual fee for the card is $150. However, you will pay no annual fee for the first year.

Earning Miles

With this card, you’ll earn a decent chunk of Delta SkyMiles on everyday purchases:-

  • 2x miles for every dollar you spend on dining (including takeout and delivery) and groceries in the US
  • 2x miles for every dollar you spend with Delta directly
  • 1x miles on all other purchases

Simply put, if your goal is to earn Delta SkyMiles on everyday spend, then this card does the trick.

Statement Credits

You will pay no annual fee in the first year. From the second year onwards, the annual fee is $150. However, you can offset the annual fee by using the card to earn statement credits on the following purchases:

  • You will earn a $200 Delta Flight credit once you spend 10,000 in purchases in a single calendar year
  • $100 Delta Stays credit each ear, when you book qualifying prepaid hotels or vacation rentals via delta.com/stays
  • 20% discount in the form of statement credits when you pay using your card for in-flight purchases of food and beverages

When you fly Delta, you’ll enjoy the following benefits as a cardmember:

  • First checked bag free
  • Priority boarding (Zone 5)
  • 15% discount when you redeem miles to book flights operated by Delta
  • Baggage insurance (up to $1,250 for cabin baggage and up to $500 for checked baggage)

In addition to benefits while flying with Delta, you’ll also enjoy the following benefits, simply for carrying the card:

  • Car rental loss and damage insurance
  • Purchase protection and extended warranty

New Benefits

Last week, American Express added a couple of new benefits to some of their co-branded Delta SkyMiles credit card. On the Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Credit Card, you can now enjoy the following benefits:

  • $120 Rideshare credit in the US (after your first year of card renewal, up to a maximum of $10 per month)
  • An additional second checked bag free when you fly on a Delta operated domestic flight

Other Options

American Express offers a total of 7 co-branded credit cards with Delta. You have 4 options to choose from on the consumer side, 3 on the business side.

At the moment, American Express is offering limited time welcome bonus offers on six of their cards with Delta and you can earn up to 110,000 bonus SkyMiles.

Overall, the Delta SkyMiles Gold card by American Express is a great card if you’re getting started with Delta. It offers you a decent return on everyday purchases if you’re looking to earn Delta SkyMiles. Moreover, you pay no annual fee for the first year. Also, the card charges no foreign transaction fees.
