Highlights: Denver Sheraton Downtown

The service in and quality of the Sheraton Club Lounge was the highlight of my stay. There was excellent breakfast of eggs, good sausage, pastries, and muffins, as well as good food service to assist guests and clean quickly. Snacks and beverages were available all throughout the day, and the evening hors d’oeuvres were excellent. Additionally, the lounge had two computers and printers for guests, as well as an actual Club Concierge to facilitate guests’ needs!

 

Lobby

The lobby was extremely large, with plenty of seating area, and a lounge area close to the concierge and Link @ Sheraton, serving flavored cucumber water. The lobby is connected to the Yard House restaurant, as well.

Check-in was decent – although staff did not prioritize SPG Gold/Platinum guests over regular guests. The day of the Starwood/Marriott merger they put up large marketing materials and had flyers to inform guests.

The lobby is located at the GPS address, and is in a separate building from a hotel tower where we stayed. It is connected via a skybridge, as well as at basement and street level.

 

Room

The room was a standard room on a high floor – no upgrade was given. The lady made SPG Gold status on this trip, but the hotel did not grant any upgrade or gold benefits (drink, amenity, etc.) The decent view of 16th Street Mall was lovely in the evening.

Note – on two separate occasions our room smelled rank of weed, which in Denver is illegal outside private residences. The front desk was notified both times and they sent security to inquire around our neighbors. They also brought an odorizer, so this may be a not uncommon experience.

Premium internet (50MB/s) was $15 day, which was waived (although I’m not sure if it’s due to the corporate rate or Gold status).

Hotel Space / Ambience

The Sheraton Downtown Denver is very spacious and business-like, with ample convention and meeting space for hundreds of attendees. The large, dual-tower hotel is clearly designed to house large groups.

The lounge (Sheraton Club) was great, with excellent food offerings and service. Equipped with a large TV, printers, computers, and other amenities for guest access, the lounge was available at all hours with a room key. The concierge was able to help me with recommendations and other services.

Additionally, it has a microwave – which was helpful for those leftovers from the many Denver restaurants!

Food & Drink

We only enjoyed the lounge food, of breakfast, coffees and teas, and hors d’oeuvres. It is stocked thoroughly with a coffee machine, as well as a fridge full of Dasani, Sprite, Coke, and Diet Coke. We liberally helped ourselves to the Dasani – as it is highly recommended to stay hydrated in the Mile High City!

 

Fitness

The gym has 45 machines and a large weight rack for guests. It is very spacious and well equipped, to accommodate the number of guests in a large hotel. There was also an outdoor pool but it was too cold to use.

This Sheraton is rather unique in that it has a Penfields Business Center, which provides FedEx, UPS, and USPS, and package receipt services. I can count on one hand the number of hotels I’ve seen with in-house shipping and package business centers, and this is useful for all of those business travelers.

One point – a sign in the hotel talks about a Game Room on the fifth floor. However, when I called the front desk to ask about it, they said they had no such thing. No game room here! As a result, you should check out 1UP beercade in Lodo or Colfax for your gaming fix.

The Sheraton is located at the southeast end of the 16th St Mall, on Court St. Use the free MallRide bus to traverse up and down the street! It stops on every block to Union Station, so enjoy the mall and various shops, eateries, and restaurants!

Issue

A major negative was the smell of weed filtering in from neighboring guestrooms on two separate occasions. Another issue was our reservation, booked as separate one day stays, which the hotel was able to connect but required the constant changing of keys. On more than one occasion, faulty or non-functioning keys locked out either my lady or myself.

Note that after hours entrance and elevator use also require room keys.

 

Overall, it was a pretty enjoyable experience outside the minor hiccups. Well located, the Sheraton is excellent for pleasure and business travellers alike.
