A few weeks back, I wrote this post about the latest benefit added to the American Express Business Gold Card and the Business Plaitnum Card. Amex added a brand new ChatGPT credit to both cards.

American Express Fraud Alert

I used my card ending in xx07 to make the purchase and put it on a recurring billing cycle. In this post, I’ve explained how I planned to max the benefit from the card.

On Thursday, I got an Amex fraud alert on the app for the same card that I’d used to make the ChatGPT purchase. It seemed like someone was trying to buy a Claude subscription with my card. I marked the transaction as fraudulent and Amex immediately sent me an email telling me that the card would be replaced and that a new card would be sent soon. Immediately, I logged into my account and saw that the new card number was showing up as xx02.

I thought the saga was over. About 15 minutes later, the Amex app alerted me again about another attempted purchase with the same merchant. This time, it was showing up as a fraud alert on my ‘new’ replaced card ending in xx02. I once again marked the transaction as fraud. Amex showed some system error so I called Amex to check what was going on.

The rep told me that after the first attempt, there was another attempt it was charged to the new replaced card as the saved details that were stolen were transferred to that card. She then confirmed that another replacement was issued. I logged in and checked, to see that now the same Business Gold Card was showing up as one ending in xx06.

The Pundit’s Mantra

While I’m not implying any correlation, I found it really odd that a few weeks after I put an AI related billing purchases on a recurring basis that my card details were apparently ‘stolen’ to make a purchase for another AI subscription service.

Needless to say, but it always helps if you have your banking app notifications on. In this, the Amex app notified me immediately during both the attempts that were made on the stolen card.
