Australia’s Qantas is going to start a KLM codeshare agreement. This will allow passengers to connect between both airline’s networks over Singapore.

Qantas has entered into a number of codeshare arrangements recently. There is an extensive arrangement with Cathay Pacific in place, as well as with Air France and Air New Zealand.

Qantas and KLM Codeshare

Passengers in Australia will be able to fly to Amsterdam, joining the KLM service in Singapore. As this will be on a QF code, they will earn frequent flyer points and status credits as though they are flying Qantas. Access to the KLM lounges in Amsterdam is also provided.

For KLM passengers, several destinations in Australia will become available. People will transfer in Singapore and join Qantas services to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

Qantas recently switched their Sydney-Dubai-London flights back to Sydney-Singapore-London. This has increased the importance of Singapore as a hub for the carrier.

Air France have already entered into an arrangement with Qantas, flying to Paris from Singapore and also from Hong Kong with the Qantas code, and put their code on numerous services in Australia. The new KLM codeshare will add to this.

Overall Thoughts

While Qantas does have an arrangement in place with Emirates for services to Europe, more options are becoming available with the new agreements such as the KLM codeshare and the ones with Air France and other airlines.

It provides more choice for consumers and importantly for Qantas, drives more traffic onto their very profitable domestic network. I wonder which airline partner will be next?

What do you think of the new codeshare agreement? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
