As per DDG, American Express appears to have quietly renamed the American Express Green Card as the “American Express Classic Green Card”. On the surface, this might not sound particularly exciting. However, longtime Amex watchers know that seemingly minor changes like this often attract attention for a reason. The question now is whether this is simply a branding update or the first sign that a Green Card refresh is finally on the way.
American Express Green Card
DDG recently reported that references to the Green Card are now showing up as the “Classic Green Card” on American Express channels. Amex has not announced any changes to the card’s benefits, annual fee or earning structure. For now, the only visible change appears to be the name itself. Still, it’s enough to spark speculation. After all, companies don’t typically adjust product names without a reason.
A Refresh Could Be Coming
Historically, American Express has often made subtle branding or design changes before launching a larger product refresh. We’ve seen this playbook before. Amex will tweak marketing materials, update card artwork or make small adjustments to product branding before eventually announcing a revamped card with new benefits, earning rates or statement credits. That doesn’t mean a refresh is guaranteed. But the timing would make sense. The Green Card has largely remained unchanged while American Express has spent the last few years updating other products across its portfolio. Meanwhile, competitors have continued adding benefits and increasing rewards in the mid-tier travel card space. The Green Card has started to feel a bit overlooked.
Why The Green Card Matters
The Green Card occupies an interesting position within the Membership Rewards ecosystem. It earns valuable Membership Rewards points and offers solid travel-focused earning categories. Yet it often gets overshadowed by the Gold Card and Platinum Card, both of which receive significantly more attention from consumers and from Amex itself. A refresh could help reposition the card and make it more competitive for travelers who don’t want to pay Platinum-level annual fees. Of course, that’s assuming a refresh is actually coming. Right now, we’re simply connecting dots.
The Pundit’s Mantra
At the moment, there is no official announcement from American Express. This could turn out to be nothing more than a harmless branding change that never leads to anything meaningful. That said, it’s worth noting that the Green Card’s last major refresh occurred in 2019, when Amex introduced the current earning structure, annual fee and benefits package.
Given how aggressively American Express has refreshed other products over the last several years, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Green Card is finally next in line. For now, all we can do is watch and wait. However, if history is any guide, subtle changes like this are often worth paying attention to.

Marriott Bonvoy
Why does an AMEX card refresh always remind me of Delta or Mariott “enhancing” their loyalty program?
The Green Card overlaps too much with the Gold Card. It would be better if it became a competitor to Bilt more than Amex itself.
