Highlights: MOXY Phoenix Tempe/ASU Area
This place was, in my opinion, millennial and hipster heaven. A very interesting, modern hotel. MOXY Phoenix highlights include the checkin bar, separate iron rooms, their unique airport shuttle service, and just outlandish décor. Note that’s there is no complimentary Platinum breakfast – which was an issue. Lobby & Check-in
Walk straight in at the hotel towards the bar. That’s right, they have a check in bar. Never seen one of those before! Associates wore plain black t-shirts, and it’s easy to mistake them for bar servers – which is another of their responsibilities! Multi-talented here.
Platinum guests a welcome amenity of water and pretzel snack, and all guests get a complimentary cocktail. Mine was a basic one, yet delicious, made with dragonfruit rum.
Room
Very interesting design. No closet, but hangers and hooks on the walls. Nice bathroom – definitely want to incorporate some of the design of the shower in my future luxury residence. Record player on the desk, and a nice view of the pool area.
No refrigerator – had to call and request one, which took 10-15 minutes to arrive. It was small – not able to easily hold my pizza from my previous night’s stay so I had to devise a way to shove it in.
Ironing is done in separate ironing rooms on each floor, with interesting looking bags hanging on the wall. They have steamers in the ironing rooms available for guest use.
Hotel Space / Ambiance
Definitely vibrant and hip – one of the few places I felt very comfortable doing my work in the lobby and business center areas. Caters to families and millennials, many here on holiday. Plenty of lounging space, as well as free to play pinball games and old school arcade machines. Bikes & helmets are also available for guests to use, free of charge.
Food & Drink
This one was an issue. When I was originally scouting locations a few weeks ago, I called the MOXY and confirmed breakfast for platinum guests, but when I arrived they said breakfast was not included. At checkout, they informed me that was due to a Marriott policy change, which is unfortunate. They did have a great happy hour in the afternoon, with $2 and $3 draft beers brewed locally, as well as a range of food options.
Fitness
Gym is located on the fourth floor, and quite small – with just four machines and a small weights area. They did have a great punching bag to use.
Miscellaneous
This was a great experience, very weirdly different than any stay I’ve had previously. One minor caveat would be the flip-flop on breakfast, making me slightly hesitant to come back. I really treasure and value the free breakfast at hotels, usually when it is more than continental.
Cash rate was $122.27 after tax for this night, a category 3 hotel. At 15,000 Marriott points, or 5,000 Starwood points (SPG), the CPP (cents per point) is 2.44, which is about average. It is not a great valuation compared to super cheap Four Points, Sheratons, Alofts, or Hyatts in the PHX airport area, but there was intangible value in sampling this new hotel chain.
One great feature of the MOXY is their airport shuttle service, where they have no shuttle. Instead, they have an agreement with Uber, and will call you a car from the airport when you arrive in PHX, and to the airport when you leave the hotel. Very efficient and savvy, especially as it’s on demand rather than timed! I’d stay here again, and definitely so if they reinstituted breakfast.
Update Post Trip
Upon speaking with Marriott Platinum Concierge, they informed me that in addition to Ritz Carltons, Gaylord and MOXY hotels do not have free breakfast for platinum guests. Apparently I was provided incorrect information twice, once when calling and the other when checking out. 5,000 Marriott points were added for my troubles.
