HIGHLIGHTS: Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Santa Cruz – Capitola

Highlights include the reasonable Marriott points cost (35,000), with off peak cost of 30,000, and the friendliness of staff and the nice design of the hotel property. Unfortunately the Hyatt that I stayed at previously was unavailable, but they were able to host my group in a suite with a queen pull out and allowed us two car parking without any additional cost.

I would certainly come here again if I needed to go to Santa Cruz and couldn’t make the Hyatt.

My standard hotel reviews include a breakdown by the following topics. Feel free to skip to whichever section you find most interesting.

  • Highlights
  • Lobby
  • Room
  • Hotel Space / Ambiance
  • Food & Drink
  • Fitness
  • Miscellaneous

LOBBY & CHECK-IN

The hotel is located in the corner of a block, with the side street entrance leading to the underground garage, and the main street entrance showing several ground level exterior parking spots. Upon entering, head up the stairs on the left to the check in desk.

ROOM

I had a basic king room I believe, with a small refrigerator / microwave area, and pull out couch. Nothing out of the ordinary, it was exactly what I expected for a Fairfield Inn. A small store next to the check in desk held drinks, snacks, and food items for purchase.

HOTEL SPACE / AMBIANCE

As I came in on the weekend of the Santa Cruz Triathlon, there were plenty of other young adults, decked out in their workout and biking gear. Definitely a lot of people in the breakfast area, and passing through the lobby.

FOOD & DRINK

From the lobby, head up the stairs to the second floor, where they have a decent but basic continental and heated breakfast section. Of note is their waffle makers for guests to use. Sufficient for pre-workout juices and energy to make it through the day.

FITNESS

The fitness center was quite small with only a few treadmills and a small workout free weight area, but it is probably sufficient for a hotel of this size.

MISCELLANEOUS

I do appreciate their service in helping me fit two cars on my reservation – without charging me for the second car. They advised one park underneath in the garage and one outside on the ground level parking spots, giving me a pass to place on the ground level. Additionally, their sales manager was able to take some time out of his day to help address a situation my friends were facing, where their room block had become cheaper than the publicly available rate at another Marriott hotel, and the hotel staff at that other Marriott being obstinate and entirely unhelpful. He gave me several good points to make to both the other hotel as well as the Marriott support line, which unfortunately amounted to nothing, but I appreciate him taking time out of his day to speak with me regardless.
