Boutique Hotel Review: The Roger New York

Roger New York

BACKGROUND:

For my spring break trip I booked The Roger New York and I was really excited to try out a boutique hotel! I’ve never really stayed at a boutique hotel and New York has a ton of them! The outside of the hotel is old looking and kind of iffy, but the lobby is really nice and looks very hip.

MY OVERALL SCORE: 3

5: Excellent, Highly Recommend
4: Very Good, Solid Choice to Consider
3: Ok, Check Other Options Before Booking
2: Below Par, Try to Avoid
1: Terrible, Run Far Away

Quick Summary: The Roger New York has a great location in Midtown Manhattan, just a short walk from the Empire State Building. However, the rooms are a bit small, and the sound insulation is not the best.

THE ROOM:

I was in a “Premier Double” and our room was right in front of the elevator, which wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I never heard like a “ding” but throughout the night the room kind of vibrated when the elevator shot past our floor.

The room was nicely appointed, but definitely on the smaller side. I expected it as we were in New York and that this was a boutique hotel. They did a pretty good job with space, but the bed frames were too big for the “Double” Sized beds. They might as well have just put a queen as the bed frames took up the space anyways.

The bathroom was really tiny though. Specifically the sink area. Despite this, it all kind of worked though. The shower was nice, and it didn’t make the whole bathroom wet despite only having a half glass partition. They used Bigelow products which was nice, but had the pumps in the shower for shampoo, conditioner and bath gel. (Sigh, I like the little toiletries bottles)

The biggest problem with the room was the AC! The room stayed at 78 no matter what we did! With fan on high, it would just maintain the room at 78 and if we didn’t have the fan up it would go to 80. Not the most pleasant!

Also, the soundproofing insulation was not the best. I could hear voices from the rooms next to us on both sides. Thankfully, none of our neighbors were too loud so we were able to drown out their talking with the AC fan. But if you get a bad neighbor, you could be in for a rough night.

SERVICE + AMENITIES:

Service was good, with the front desk being friendly for the most part. They did let me check out at 1 PM so that was nice. The housekeepers on my floor were always nice and said hello! An interesting part of the hotel was the elevators. Being a boutique hotel, the guest elevators are shared with housekeepers and maintenance so sometimes they got crowded.

Well, one thing I don’t like about the hotel is the $39 resort fee. And what’s worse is that I wasn’t told at check-in what the fee included. There’s tea and coffee served in the morning until 9 am. And also apparently there’s a gym that I didn’t have time to use 🙂

LOCATION:

I love the Midtown location! Perfect distance to walk to Herald Square, Times Square and the Flatiron District. I got really good exercise on this trip walking everywhere.

THE VERDICT:

I love the location of the Roger, and if a good price pops up I would be down to give it another shot. However, there are so many options in New York and I would definitely like to try other options as well. I have my eyes on the brand new Mondrian Park Avenue just a few feet away from the Roger New York!

Happy travels,
