Marriott is bringing AI into hotel search. The company has launched the beta version of Ask Bonvoy, a conversational search tool designed to help Marriott Bonvoy members explore Marriott’s massive global portfolio using natural language.
As mentioned in my post yesterday, the company now has 10,000 properties across 146 countries and territories. That scale is impressive, but it also creates a problem: finding the right hotel can be tedious. Ask Bonvoy is Marriott’s attempt to make that process easier.
New Marriott Feature: What Ask Bonvoy Does
Ask Bonvoy lets members search using normal prompts instead of only relying on rigid filters. For example, instead of manually entering a city, dates, brand, amenities and hotel type, a traveler may eventually be able to search for something like: “family-friendly beach resort in Mexico with a kids club and good dining,” or “luxury hotel in Europe with a spa and easy access to museums.” The tool then interprets the trip purpose and returns curated results based on Marriott’s verified property data.
Marriott says Ask Bonvoy is grounded exclusively in Marriott-owned, verified property information. In theory, that should reduce the risk of unreliable or outdated AI-generated hotel recommendations. During the beta phase, users can still use traditional search filters like dates and location. Once a traveler finds a hotel through Ask Bonvoy, the booking process moves back into Marriott’s existing reservation system.
Why This Could Be Useful
Hotel search is still surprisingly clunky. Most booking platforms are built around filters, not intent. You can search by destination, price, date, brand and amenities, but that does not always answer the real question travelers have.
Is this hotel good for a family trip?
Is it close enough to the convention center?
Does it feel more like a business hotel or a resort?
Is it useful for a short layover?
That is where conversational search could help.
If Ask Bonvoy works well, it could reduce the time spent clicking through property pages and comparing amenities manually.
The Bonvoy Angle
For Bonvoy members, the more interesting development may come later. Marriott says the model is expected to eventually support loyalty points-based searches. That could be a meaningful upgrade.
One of the most annoying parts of hotel loyalty is finding good award availability and deciding whether cash or points makes more sense. If Ask Bonvoy can eventually handle prompts like “show me beach resorts in the Caribbean under 70,000 points per night” or “find luxury hotels in Europe with good award availability,” that could be genuinely useful.
Of course, that depends on execution. AI search is only valuable if the results are accurate, current and better than what travelers can find manually.
The Pundit’s Mantra
Marriott’s biggest strength is also its biggest challenge: scale. With 10,000 properties, the company has a hotel for almost every type of traveler, but finding the right one can take time. A good conversational search tool could make Marriott’s portfolio easier to navigate.
That said, I’ll reserve judgment until this becomes widely available and actually supports points-based searches. That is where this could become especially useful for Bonvoy members. For now, Ask Bonvoy is only available in beta to select users.
If Marriott can make hotel search feel less like scrolling through filters and more like asking a knowledgeable travel advisor, this could become one of the more practical uses of AI in travel.
