A global tech outage is affecting multiple businesses worldwide, bringing banks, airlines and other businesses to a grinding halt. Given how interconnected we are in today’s day and age, it comes and no surprise that this tech outage has affected several businesses across different industries at once. In this case, the outage has affected businesses across multiple industries, including airlines.

Tech Outage

As per CNN, the outage seems to have been triggered by CrowdStrike. As per reports, it originated due to a software update issued by CrowdStrike. The issue cropped up when cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike issued a software update, leading to outages on several computers that were running the Microsoft Windows software.

Businesses across the world are reporting IT outages, including Windows “blue screen of death” errors on their computers, in what has already become one of the most widespread IT disruptions in recent years. The outage — linked to an update rolled out for widely used security software made by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike early on Friday — has affected computers running Microsoft Windows at companies across various sectors, from airlines, banks, food chains and brokerage houses, to news organizations, and railway networks. The travel sector seems to be the hardest hit.

Per TechCrunch, the outage has not only impacted airlines, but also banks and even stock exchanges.

Airlines and airports across the U.S., Germany, France, the Netherlands and U.K, to Singapore, Australia, India, Taiwan, China and Japan, are reporting problems with check-in and ticketing systems, resulting in flight delays and ample chaos at airports.

In the U.K., the London Stock Exchange reported disruptions. Several doctors in the U.K said on X that the outage had hit the National Health Service’s clinical computer systemthat contains medical records and is used for scheduling appointments.

People also started sharing images of how airlines are now issued handwritten boarding passes.

The Pundit’s Mantra

While it seems like operations are slowly coming back on, this is likely to have a domino effect on flights worldwide, given the level of interconnectedness around the world with airline partnerships and alliances.

If you’re looking to fly in the next few hours, then it would be prudent to keep checking notifications from your airline as certain airlines may be more affected than others.
