Hotel Review: Hilton New York Fashion District

Background:

I needed a hotel in the city, and was considering anything around Midtown Manhattan. The Hilton New York Fashion District popped up on my radar as it had a decent rate of under $250 all in per night. It was also nice that they don’t charge a “Destination Fee” that many of the hotels in the city now charge.

Online Check-In:

The day prior to arrival, the Hilton Honors App notified me that I could check in online. When I had booked originally, I was planning to say alone so I booked the most entry level 1 Queen Bed. Normally at other Hilton’s I’ve stayed at, with Diamond Status, the online check-in generally has an upgraded room and sometimes you can switch around bed types. I was hoping to be able to choose a 2 Double Bed room since my friend was going to be staying with me, but the online check-in only showed the 1 Queen Bed type. Since there was not a “Message Hotel” option in the chat which was sad as I generally like using that option with other hotels, I gave the front desk a call. The front desk associate was very friendly and was able to get the room type changed to a 2 Double Beds with City View, and I was able to complete online check-in and choose my room.

I chose a room on the 21st floor. The hotel has 23 floors but the top floor is a rooftop bar/restaurant. This hotel is probably one of the smaller Hilton’s I’ve been in. It’s boutique style, and doesn’t contain any suites for that matter. Our floor only contained 14 rooms.

Hilton New York Fashion District Location + Check-In:

The hotel is on 26th Street and 7th Ave. The 28th Street Subway station is very close and served by the 1 Line. It is 0.3 miles from Penn Station and very close to the Chelsea and Flatiron areas which is convenient.

We arrived to the hotel around 1pm but our room wasn’t ready yet as standard check-in is 4pm. The front desk associate said she would give us a call when the room was ready. They didn’t call us until 4:15pm, but thankfully my friend and I were busy around the city so it was okay.

We arrived back to the hotel around 4:30pm and were quickly checked in. The $36 ($18 per person) Diamond dining credit per night was explained to us that it had to be used each day (cannot add multiple days together). It was only available to use the restaurant on the lobby level, Chelsea Table + Stage, which is open for Breakfast and Dinner only. You cannot use the credit on room service. The Sandbar Rooftop isn’t owned by the hotel, so unfortunately the credit could not be used there.

The Room:

Our room was on the 21st floor, which is 2 floors from the top. It was a “2 Double Beds City View” Room. Upon walking into the room, it looked modern, but a bit on the small side.

The room featured 2 Double (Full Sized) Beds. The beds were quite plush, and the sheets and comforter set were comfortable. From the last Hyatt Regency I just checked out of, thankfully this Hilton had a thicker and higher quality comforter. It was perfect to share with a friend, but a family of four might feel a bit squeezed.

There is a desk area, 49 inch TV and Keurig Machine included with a few pods. Also, the room had a small closet with hangers and iron. The room contained an interesting mini-bar, but no fridge for personal use.

The view was South facing, and you could see mostly water towers, with some buildings in view. The view wasn’t the best; I wonder if north facing would be better? There weren’t any north facing views available when I did online check-in, so all potential rooms available were south facing for me.

The AC unit was by the window and the only pet peeve it that the unit was a bit noisy. Additionally, if you wanted to have the AC on and work by the desk, the desk area would be very cold.

The Bathroom:

It was a good size for New York City, with a nice standup shower. Toiletries were standard for Hilton, with the Verbena & Lavender scent from Crabtree and Evelyn. The shower water pressure was solid.

Dining:

The hotel has 2 restaurants on site, Chelsea Table + Stage and the Sandbar Rooftop. Chelsea Table also has room service available.

Since we had to use our Diamond dining credit, we tried a few meals at Chelsea Table + Stage. It’s kind of a cool restaurant, as they also have nights with a performance + dinner downstairs.

The first night we checked in, we had dinner at Chelsea Table + Stage. It was restaurant week in New York City, so we tried that 3 course menu for $45. We had tried the Bibb Lettuce Salad, Crispy Baby Artichokes, Brick Chicken, Swordfish, Fig Cheesecake and Flourless Chocolate Torte. All of the dishes were pretty good, but the artichokes were a bit too crispy for our liking. The desserts were perfect to share as the cheesecake was a bit light, and the chocolate torte was a bit sweet, so they complimented each other well.

Breakfast:

For the remainder of the days, we used our credit for breakfast at Chelsea Table and Stage. Most days we called to order and then picked it up to go and one day we dined in. I felt that dining in, the portions were bigger. The Diamond credit was enough to cover most of the bill for 2 dishes, just had to patch a few dollars and tip.

I thought the eggs benedict was good, but the ham portion was too salty. It was nice that it had a salad with it too. Also, you can’t really go wrong with the eggs any style. The bacon was a bit too crunchy if I had to be picky. My friend though the Quinoa was pretty decent, and then the avocado toast was pretty good. Overall, not bad to use the credit!

Sandbar Rooftop:

I visited the rooftop one night with some friends and it was pretty cool! Some of the areas have folding windows so depending on the weather they can close it up, or leave it open. The views aren’t bad from the rooftop as well. It’s a shame it’s operated by a different owner than the hotel as it would be nice to use the Hilton Diamond Food Credit here.

The drinks were on the pricey side ($17-$23), but the service was very attentive and everyone was super friendly. I would definitely recommend a visit! They have comfortable loungers, more traditional tables and even swings.

Amenities:

The hotel has a fitness center one floor below the lobby and it is open 24 hours. There is also some conference space, but you do have to pay by hour to rent them.

The last day when we went to check out (Sunday), I asked for a late checkout but they could only accommodate 1 extra hour (from 11am to 12pm). Unfortunate, but we ended up just doing baggage hold.

The Verdict:

Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Hilton New York Fashion District. It has a convenient location, boutique feel, and comfortable beds. For the right price, I would consider staying at the property again.
