Alaska Airlines Regional Subsidiary Cutting Flights and Eliminating Routes This Winter
Alaska Airlines is cutting dozens of flights and routes from its Portland and Seattle hubs this winter. These flights are operated by Alaska Airlines’ regional carrier, Horizon Air. Horizon Air operates all of Alaska’s Bombardier Q400 aircraft and many of the airline’s Embraer E-175s. These aircraft fly to many of Alaska Airlines’ short-haul and secondary destinations.
However, due to an ongoing crew shortage at Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines will cut multiple routes this winter. Horizon Air continues to face crew shortages with hundreds of flights having been canceled this past summer.
Below is a full list of route suspensions and flight cuts;
- Los Angeles to Medford, OR | Suspended Indefinitely | Effective 9.30
- Portland, OR to Kansas City | Suspended through January 3rd, 2018 | Eff. 11.30
- Portland, OR to Omaha | Suspended through March 18th, 2018 | Eff. 11.3
- Portland, OR to Tri-Cities, WA | Suspended through March 12th, 2018 | Eff. 9.30
- Portland, OR to St. Louis | Suspended through January 3rd, 2018 | Eff. 11.27
- Seattle to Colorado Springs | Suspended Indefinitely | Eff. November 4th
- Seattle to Great Falls. MT | Flights cut to once a day till Spring 2018 | Eff. 9.30
Of course, these cutbacks are subject to change. Additionally, all cutbacks are assumed to be related to Horizon’s crew shortage. After looking into these routes in years past, these routes appear to be year-round indicating cutbacks related to issues on Horizon’s end.
There is some good news to these cutbacks. As you can see from the list above, all cutbacks (except for flights affecting COS and MFR) are temporary with some lasting just weeks. Unfortunately, these cuts couldn’t come at a worse time. The holiday season will be directly impacted by these cuts.
Do you know anyone that was impacted by these route cutbacks? Can Horizon Air avoid further schedule changes in the future?

The first 2 paragraphs essential say the same thing different ways. Do you have any information or are you just regurgitating an AP story?
Um, I use Google Flights, ITA Flights Matrix, Alaska’s official flight schedules, and Horizon Air’s press releases.
As a matter of fact, the AP has yet to report on this. Only one other BoardingArea blogger picked this up.
Sorry, I hate short posts so I stretch text.
