SuperValu are a supermarket chain in Ireland and their Real Rewards programme has Aer Lingus AerClub as a partner. The relationship has been in place since AerClub launched.

I like the partnership, as it means I can earn frequent flyer points on my grocery shopping. It is not like Ireland is festooned with options to earn Avios, so it’s nice to have this.

Will They Ditch Aer Lingus As A Partner?

Last week I received a survey from the supermarket about their loyalty scheme. Questions revolved around the current partnerships, as well as options for the future. Under consideration is being able to use your points for cash back on purchases with other retailers, or using points for thing like experiences.

Using points for experiences such as going hot air ballooning does not appeal to me at all. Ditto with money back. All of it is designed to funnel my money into places I usually wouldn’t spend it, so there is zero interest from me.

AerClub seems to be popular as a programme, so perhaps people are redeeming Real Rewards for Avios quite a lot. Could the transfer bonuses be an indicator? You earn 1 Avios for 1 Real Rewards point, and there have been transfer bonuses at various times since the beginning.

It started at double, then triple (I wept, as I took the first one!), double, double, 50% and currently 25%. Maybe they are not needing to incentivise people too much due to popularity. Here’s hoping!

Overall Thoughts

Aer Lingus should remain a partner of SuperValu Real Rewards. Why? For a start, it suits me, but also I can’t see them partnering with the other supermarkets in the Irish market. Tesco is the only viable option as Lidl and Aldi are not an option.

What do you think of the fact that AerClub is a partner in the SuperValu Real Rewards programme? Would you be sad to see them go or don’t care? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
