One of the best things about our hobby is the ability redeem our miles and points for outsized value. A few weeks back, I wrote about how Hilton Honors points are often underestimated in terms of how much value they can provide. Most people in our hobby love the World of Hyatt program, as the hotel chain has some fantastic properties and plenty of wonderful options to redeem. In this case, I was able to redeem my Hyatt points for great value for a booking that was made last minute.

In this case, I was looking to make a last minute booking for a 4 night stay in London. Given that it’s summer, I was expecting that it would be a tough task, even though there are plenty of Hyatt properties. I was looking for a property closer to city centre. In this case, the Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars was the only one that was available for booking with World of Hyatt points.

I already had enough Hyatt points in my account. You can also transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio to World of Hyatt. Currently, Chase is offering limited time bonuses on both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve. With these limited time offers by Chase, you can earn 75,000 Ultimate Rewards points from a single credit card bonus. You can access the details of the offers here.

Miles and Points Correctly

I’ve argued in the past that assigning a numerical value to miles and points is an inaccurate science. However, we can use that numerical value as a guideline in the absence of better methods. In this case, I was looking to book a last minute stay from Jun 7-11. The cash price for a standard room at the property was astronomically high.

If I would’ve paid cash, the total for 4 nights would’ve been a whopping $2,710

I checked Hyatt’s website and found a standard room available. The price per night was 20,000 World of Hyatt points per night. Most of the other hotels in the vicinity were showing no availability for points bookings. I proceeded to finalize the booking and then called Hyatt’s customer service to also attach a club upgrade certificate, which would give access to the club lounge.

The Pundit’s Mantra

In conclusion, I think that I got lucky since many properties were simply blocking points bookings, even when plenty of rooms were available using cash.

In the end, I was able to extract amazing value from my World of Hyatt points, a sweet 3.4 cents per point. Over the last 1 year, I’ve been able to redeem my Hyatt points for some memorable stays in Asia and the Middle East at the Hyatt Regency Phuket, Thailand, the Andaz Abu Dhabi Capital Gate, UAE, Grand Hyatt, Dubai, UAE and the Hyatt Centric Mumbai, India.

How about 4.4 – Alila Maldives

Ken

A lot of people simply value the points in their own eco system but what is the alternative? I am sure you find much better paid stay within 300usd in London if I value chase points at 1.5. I value it slightly better than 1.5 so I would have stayed somewhere else by paying cash. It is not like hyatt regency is an aspirational place to stay. Or have you checked IHG? They tend to provide an excellent value for expensive cities. Or maybe you got a lot of points Vue referral but still you could have redeemed via chase… Read more »
