I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Dehradun Resort and Spa during my most recent vacation in India. This was by far the most disappointing hotel stay of that vacation. This hotel is the only luxury resort in Dehradun, so I continue to have clients booking this hotel for their vacation. However, by international standards, this hotel was a massive disappointment.
Booking the Hyatt Regency Dehradun Resort and Spa
Having family in Dehradun, it was never really a question of staying at the hotel. But during our daily commute, we would always see the hotel from a distance, and would always imagine what would it be like to stay at this hotel. After all, the pricing of the hotel constantly exceeded 30,000 INR / night (US$300 to US$400 / night), which is expensive by international standards but ridiculously expensive by Indian standards.
I booked this stay through a very kind friend of mine, who provided an expiring Hyatt Free Night Certificate.
Hyatt Regency Dehradun Resort and Spa also participates in Hyatt Prive. When you book with Earthyan, we are able to extend the following perks:
- US$100 Property credit, and,
- Daily full breakfast for 2, and,
- Early check-in, subject to availability, and
- Late check-out, subject to forecasted occupancy, and
- Room upgrade, at time of booking, subject to forecasted occupancy, and,
- Exclusive welcome amenity, and,
- Complimentary Wi-Fi
The best perk of Hyatt Regency Dehradun is that they upgrade to their largest suite as well. So you only need to book a category lower and you are virtually guaranteed an upgrade to the largest room in the hotel.
Driving to the Hyatt Regency Dehradun
I never really thought I would comment on the drive to the hotel.
But this is important to say, if you are an international tourist, you must come through the hotel car. Going to the hotel in an Uber or a private unknown taxi service will be terrifying. I drove in with my cousin, and all of us were uncomfortable. We never knew if we were on the right path or the right road as we drove towards the hotel. There was an unpaved one lane road, in the middle of nowhere.
As a local Dehradun resident, we were uncomfortable, I can’t imagine what a tourist might feel as they drive over to the hotel.
Check-in at Hyatt Regency Dehradun
We were provided a local Uttarakhand hat as a welcome gift. We were checked in immediately and headed straight to the room.
There was no acknowledgement of the Explorist Status that the room was booked under. However, upon request, we were extended a 2pm late check-out.
During our check-in, it was very clear that there was a wedding celebration at the hotel. That meant the hotel was quite full with a lot of occupants coming in from the wedding ceremony.
The pictures below show a beautiful marble lobby that rivals any luxury hotel in the world. At this point in time, there was as sense of excitement as we were completing our check-in formalities.
Hyatt King Room
Unfortunately at this point in time, we already had a bad drive to the hotel. As we exited our room on the sixth floor, there were two helpers of the wedding celebration who had settled themselves outside the lift lobby that definitely did not have the Hyatt feel or experience.
But as we walked through, we walked into our room.
I’ll let the pictures do the talking. High level though, the room was nothing unique. You could find this Hyatt hotel with these amenities anywhere in the world and you would have still had the same experience.
From the room, we could see the wedding preparations that was making us all feel a bit uncomfortable.
Swimming Pool
I only saw the swimming pool at night, but it was quiet with dim lighting. Once again, not the most comforting space to be hanging out after dark, despite the pool open till 8pm.
Conclusion
To be perfectly honest with everyone, the Hyatt Regency Dehradun was a disappointment. I’m sure had we not just arrived from the Westin Himalayas, we would have had something positive to share. But coming from the Westin Himalayas, the entire Hyatt Regency experience was disappointing, made worse by the wedding celebration, and the random helpers on the floor awaiting instructions from their employers.

I truly have no idea what you are so disappointed about. It looks like a perfectly nice Hyatt Regency room with an excellent lobby.
Oh no, a tent being put up for a wedding celebration…just horrible! Are you serious?
Perfectly nice Hyatt Regency indeed if you find it anywhere in the city in North America. If we were to isolate the review to the rooms, lobby and bathroom, it was a great hotel.
With the context of a luxury mountainside resort in India, charging a very hefty premium, the expectations are far more than an average Hyatt Regency. We booked this hotel after coming from the Westin, and the differences were stark. I will have that review posted shortly as well.
I did have a client stay in one of their largest suite, and he was very impressed with the entire service offering. So your experiences may vary.
I’m sorry, but I don’t see how this hotel was terrible in any way. The room looks great, the bathroom looks great, the lobby is nice, the hallways are nice. You’re upset about a wedding on property? And a guy in jeans in the elevator lobby? Tell us about the restaurants and the service you received. I’m not sure what you are expecting from a Hyatt Regency, but the pictures of this place look like it is one of the nicer ones. You gave a 30% on breakfast but didn’t mention it all in the review.
I did not really comment on the breakfast because the quality of breakfast was very disappointing and what felt like was stale food. I will admit to that error.
Though, breakfast offerings in India are compared to a very high standard. If you compare it to a Hyatt Regency in North America, I am sure it would be considered a fantastic breakfast. You compare it a luxury mountain resort in India, and it would be considered a disappointment.
The man in the jeans was actually one of four men. Safety of guests in India is important, anyone who is not a “resident” of the floor and is lingering in a floor lobby is a safety issue. I would be surprised if any hotel would be comfortable having non-guests lingering on a floor lobby, sitting on the ground (not pictured) and setting up camp there.
Reviews are always contextually important.
