Hotel Review: Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok

Takeoff To Travel

Background & Location

I have actually never properly stayed at the Kimpton property before, and the closest I’ve gotten was almost 10 years ago with the Juniper Cupertino, which was formerly the Kimpton Cypress but converted into a Curio Collection by Hilton before my stay. So, for my trip to Bangkok last year, I was excited to try out the Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok for 2 nights, which would be my first true Kimpton stay.

The Kimpton brand started in San Francisco in 1981 and was acquired by InterContinental Hotels Group in 2015. It has only recently been that the luxury boutique hotel brand started to expand its footprint in Asia-Pacific. The Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok opened in 2020 and is located in the same development as the Sindhorn Kempinski Hotel Bangkok.

The Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok is set in one of Bangkok’s more upscale, leafy neighborhoods. It’s part of a newer development with restaurants, shops, and even a grocery store on-site, which is a nice convenience. While the immediate area feels noticeably quieter and more relaxed, it’s still just a short distance from the busy shopping district around Chidlom, where traffic and crowds can be intense around the city’s major department stores.

Takeoff Points

Date of Stay: May 2025
Pros: Solid location, well-appointed rooms & an elaborate breakfast buffet.
Cons: Our bathroom had a slight mildew smell.
Takeoff Point: Overall, I had a truly nice stay at the Kimpton Mai-Lai Bangkok, with a nicely designed room in a great location to explore Bangkok.

Arrival & Lobby

Once arrived, we were quickly checked in. Kimpton has a fun little game where you can mention a “secret password” at any participating Kimpton property (seasonally) to receive a surprise (small gifts, credits, drink vouchers). I whispered the password and got a small sleep balm (which I was expecting a bit more lol).

The Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok offers 360 guest rooms (including 97 serviced apartments).

Grand Premium Room

Our Grand Premium Room was 83 sq.m (893 sq.ft), and offered an office space, as well as great views of the city.

As you enter the room, there’s a foyer. If you proceed to the right, it’ll lead to the bathroom. Proceed forward, then there is an office area that features a large table and two chairs.

Grand Premium Bathroom

The bathroom was the star of the show as it was huge and could almost be a hotel room in itself. There was a large standalone tub, along with a sitting area, and bath salts were also provided.

Huge Tub

There were two large vanity areas, and the vanity area included a dental kit, a shower, a cap, combs, nail filers, and cotton swabs. There was also a little list of more amenities that you could request, and they would be delivered complimentary.

Vanity

The walk-in shower was very large and offered a waterfall. Toiletries were provided by HARNN, and it was specially made for the hotel.

There is a separate water closet, while there’s no bidet, there was a bum gun.

Then there was an open-air closet with a large bench and plenty of space. An iron board was provided, and this room featured a Dyson hairdryer, which is always a nice touch. Cool robes were provided, as well as a scale, yoga mat, and umbrella.

The only quirk that I found with the bathroom was a slight mildew/bathroom smell.

The Room

As you proceeded back into the room, there is a mini bar with items for purchase located to the side of the office with an espresso machine and a tea kettle.

Office Space

As you proceed into the bedroom, it is very spacious, and there’s actually a lot of open space. There’s a large king-size bed with nightstands on both sides, as well as a lounging sofa.

Since we had a third guest, a rollaway bed was brought as well.

On each nightstand, there were actually universal power adapters as well as two USB-C plugs per side. Lights and drapes can be controlled via other controls at each nightstand. On the left side of the bed, there is a Bluetooth speaker as well as a phone.

I did like the books around to make it feel more like home, and the numerous windows provided a lot of light during the daytime.

Then, if you proceed, you can actually access the large bathroom from this two as the bathroom has an entrance near the entrance as well as near the bed.

We were celebrating my mom’s birthday, and they provided plenty of sweets & balloons, which was a nice and elaborate touch!

Independent from the hotel, AVANT is an intimate fine dining restaurant on the 30th floor. It is a 1 Star MICHELIN Restaurant serving Contemporary French.

And of course, Stock.Room offers a wide range of international food options, with a la carte and buffet options all day. This is where the buffet breakfast is served in the morning. The selections were quite plentiful and tasty. There were so many different buffet stations, and you could order a la carte egg dishes (omelets, eggs Benedict, etc).

There’s a social hour from 5 to 6 PM, and you can enjoy free-flow signature drinks.

Lastly, there’s a complementary shuttle service and a seven-seater van to and from the BTS Chit Lom and Mercury Ville daily from 8 AM to 7 PM with a one-hour heads up.

The Verdict

Overall, I had a great stay at the Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok. The service is top-notch, breakfast is great, and rooms offer a comfortable experience.

  1. Thanks for posting. I stayed there 4 years ago. I’ve been to more than 150 countries and to this day, I still think of how wonderful that breakfast buffet was at STOCK ROOM. Not only were there tons of variety but the presentation and quality of the food were quite impressive. Would love to go back again just to experience that again. I also remember the rooms being spacious also. And the rooftop bar was amazing. Stayed here using my IHG free night certificate. Probably my best use of that FNC
