Note: This is a non-travel post.
Some years ago, I made a decision that I would try to create/learn something new every year, especially in those areas of creative interests. It wasn’t that I had a lot of free time. On the contrary, I was afraid that if I don’t carve out time, I might never get around to prioritizing and exploring those interests.
Setting (Attainable) Goals
My goal was simple: I wanted to be a content creator.
At the time, I wanted to learn how to edit videos. I signed up for a course, not realizing just how much work it would involve. For example, the first assignment was to get a feel of cutting/editing videos using Final Cut Pro. We were given latitude in how we want to approach the assignment. I decided to cut/edit a story arc in a FFX game and time it against a classic song.
What I thought was a simple first assignment turned into many hours of editing touches. However, it was incredibly rewarding to be able to visually cover the sentiment I wanted to capture. While the quality of the video isn’t great, I still loved the cuts and edits.
Making Your Goal a Priority
I have since explored other creative interests, from learning a new instrument, making greeting cards (using stamps and foils), to making a Disney song cover, among other things. While I have a few successes, I also flopped on a few endeavors (which is still okay).
It’s important to set attainable goals and give it a priority. Sometimes, I hear people hesitating about things they don’t know how to do or “wishing” they had done some things (i.e. travel to a country). I’d say it’s never too late to start. Anything that is worth pursuing takes time and effort, so set a goal and aim for it. Live without regrets.
There is a powerful quote I recently came across, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” In the spirit of lifelong learning and the new year, I hope to continue to learn and grow, and I hope and challenge you to do the same.
