American Express has been on a roll off late. They were quick on their feet to revamp many of their cards last week. Now, Amex is refunding annual fees for certain customers. Please note that Amex is sending out these targeted offers via email. Certain customers are also seeing these credits after logging into their accounts.
Partially refunding Annual Fees
Miles to Memories made a good find by compiling some data points about these recent refunds. For now, it looks like Amex is sending out these credits to small business card members. However, we may see Amex expand these credits to certain personal cards. However, Amex hasn’t confirmed that yet. There’s a good chance that Amex may target you if you have a renewal annual fee due in the upcoming months. As per the list compiled by Miles to Memories, recent data points to the following:
- Business Platinum Card – $200 credit
- Delta Reserve Business – $125 credit
- Delta Platinum Business – $75 credit
- Hilton Honors Business Card – $50 credit
- Marriott Bonvoy Business – $50 credit
The Pundit’s Mantra
By refunding annual fees, Amex is making a very proactive move to retain customers. Also, in a shaky economy, it’s reducing the sticker shock on some of it’s high annual fee credit cards. Among all the major issuers, Amex has shown the most fleibility in thinking outside the box and tweaking its product offering quickly.

I have the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex and was given the $50 credit you mention (will be applied to my annual fee when it comes due.)
Waiting to see if they will do anything to add value or reduce the cost of my Gold Card; I downgraded from Platinum a couple of years ago because it wasn’t delivering value for me, will it be time to go back to Green? lol
Hi Daviator SF,
While it’s great that you got the $50 credit, be careful with the downgrade. If you downgrade to the Green, you won’t be eligible for a welcome bonus on the Green in the future as per Amex’s terms.
