In happy news, Alaska Airlines is joining the oneworld alliance. Another quality airline is joining the group, and I for one am absolutely delighted!
A couple of years ago, I was fortunate enough to visit Alaska Airlines headquarters in Seattle on a University trip. The people there gave us a great day of presentations on their roles, plus a tour of the facility, so I came away very impressed with the operation.
Alaska Airlines Is Joining Oneworld!
I have always thought Alaska Airlines would be a great fit for the oneworld alliance. They have partnerships with Qantas, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and American Airlines for a start.
As the frequent flyer earning is not as lucrative as a full alliance member, I book with American Airlines over Alaska. That is something I lament. Quite frankly, the Seattle based carrier gives a better passenger experience in my opinion.
When I flew Alaska Airlines many years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Getting to do that again will be an absolute pleasure, I just hope they live up to the memory.
Overall Thoughts
Alaska Airlines joining oneworld is great news. It really made my day! When the press release arrived in my e-mail inbox, I saved reading it for last, I was that pleased.

I am SFO based and just moved to One World from United (a 1k refugee). I fly mostly trans oceanic and some west to east coast. I don’t fly American so was thinking might still fly UA for Us flights but now have a One World partner I could fly most routes.
That’s great, Alaska will definitely be a good option for you once they join, The oneworld alliance airlines are generally very good! Thanks for the comment.
why would you be excited? The only thing that is going to happen is Alaska is going to change their award chart to match American Airlines. 300000 points for business class anyone?? Worst thing that could happen.
Why would they do that? The existing airlines in the alliance have very different points totals required for flight redemption. There’s no need for things to be harmonised. Either way, I am not an Alaska frequent flyer, so I’ve no skin in that game. I’m excited as a British Airways frequent flyer that there’s another airline to earn full status and points on. Thanks for the comment!
My thoughts are coming soon as a counter. 😉 As a West Coast-based American, I’m less than thrilled.
I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts! I’ll keep an eye out for it. It’s all happiness for me though, as you might have noticed haha!
Your fellow blogger twatteratti already broke this news days ago. Why so late to the party?
Hahaha – twatteratti!!!! That’s brilliant. I’m well aware it was all over the place when it broke, I didn’t get to it, but wanted to express my pleasure at it and here we are. Thanks for the comment and the laugh!
