British Airways have announced they will be moving to Terminal 8 at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport. The terminal will be undergoing an expansion of 6,540 square metres as part of a US$344 million project.

At the same time, 5,340 square metres of existing space will be refurbished. This includes upgraded concessions, premium check-in areas, new lounges and items behind the scenes, such as aircraft stands and baggage systems.

Who Uses Terminal 8?

Terminal 8 at JFK is currently used primarily by American Airlines and there are two Admirals Club lounges available. One serves domestic flights and another covers international flights. In addition, an excellent Flagship Lounge is provided for premium international passengers.

Other airlines using the terminal at the moment are often part of the oneworld alliance. This includes Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Royal Jordanian, LATAM, and Finnair.

When Do British Airways Move?

The press release issued by British Airways states that the move will take place from 2022. Until that date, services will continue to operate out of Terminal 7.

Renovations are also happening in Terminal 7, with new First and Club lounges having recently been completed or expected to be this year. The main areas of the building are also being tarted up.

Overall Thoughts

Co-locating British Airways with American Airlines makes sense, thanks to them being transatlantic joint venture partners. Having other oneworld alliance members under the same roof also improves convenience for passengers.

The alliance plans to create lounges which will cover all airlines, rather than having airline specific facilities. Will New York Terminal 8 be one of these places? It remains to be seen if the much vaunted Concorde Room offered by British Airways will survive the move.
