A few weeks back, I had the experience of staying at one of the tallest hotels in the world. Depending on new properties that come up, the title keeps changing hands. However, this particular hotel still boasts the fact that it has the highest indoor swimming pool in the world. This time around, we made a trip to Hong Kong and decided to book the Ritz Carlton Hong Kong.

The Ritz Carlton Hong Kong is located in the International Commerce Centre and occupies floors 102 to 118 in Kowloon, perched 490 meters above Victoria Harbor. All 312 rooms of the hotel offer views of the skyline and Victoria harbor.

Booking The Hotel

We stayed at the hotel last month. Due to Marriott Bonvoy’s dynamic pricing, the prices per night can vary by a lot in points. I used a combination of hotels and free night certificates to book 3 nights and the other two nights were booked through Amex’s Fine Hotels and Resorts Collection, thanks to my Amex Platinum Card.

For the dates of my stay, the average price per night was 98,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. For two nights booked via Fine Hotels and Resorts collection, the total came up to about $800. Thanks to the hotel credit benefit, I paid $500 out of pocket for those two nights.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how I booked my stay.

Night 1: 98,000 points: Booked with the free night certificate, thanks to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card + 13,000 points. The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card offers a free night certificate of up to 85,000 points per night, during each anniversary year when you renew the card. Marriott allows you up top up to a maximum of 25,000 points per night while making a booking with your certificate, in case the points per night are more than the value of your certificate.

Night 2 & 3: 98,000 points per night = 196,000 points

Night 4 & 5: $800 in cash via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts collection, $500 after the $300 hotel credit.

Overall, I spend a total of 209,000 Marriott Bonvoy points and $500 to book a five night stay.

Thanks to the Fine Hotels & Resorts benefit, the following benefits were also applicable for the last two nights:

12pm check-in, when available
Room upgrade upon arrival, when available
Complimentary daily breakfast for two people
US$100 experience credit, unique to each property
Guaranteed 4pm late check-out
Complimentary Wi-Fi

Elite Status Benefits

If you have Platinum elite status, then you will enjoy the following benefits at the Ritz Carlton Hong Kong. Bear in mind, Ritz Carlton properties enforce their own rules, so the benefits that you may enjoy at other brands may not be applicable during a stay at the Ritz Carlton as a Platinum Elite guest.

Guaranteed welcome gift – In The Ritz–Carlton, this will be 1,000 bonus points per stay
Complimentary Late check-out until 4:00pm and room upgrade subject to hotel availability
50% bonus points on eligible expenses

This meant that barring the last two nights, we’d have no complimentary breakfast at the property. The hotel offered us an upgrade to club lounge level as well.

We accepted the offer and the total for 5 nights came to approximately $1,100 for the three of us.

Lounge Access

Club Lounge access at Ritz Carlton properties is very different from some of the other brands in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio. Once you upgrade to club level, you get the following benefits:

Complimentary pressing service of five garments per day (non-cumulative)
Dedicated Club Concierge service (from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm)
Business Centre service and complimentary Wi-Fi in the Club Lounge
Wake-up call with complimentary coffee or tea
One-hour complimentary use of meeting room at the Club Lounge per stay based on availability
Experiential Event
Complimentary in-town limousine drop-off service within Kowloon area

7:00 am – 10:30 am
(Monday – Friday)
7:00 am – 11:00 am
(Saturday, Sunday & Public holidays)

Light Lunch:
12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Afternoon Tea:
3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Hors d’Oeuvres:
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Cordials:
8:30 pm – 10:00 pm

We were really impressed by the club lounge experience during the entire duration of our stay. Some things really stood out.

Very helpful and attentive staff, that took very good care of our dietary preferences
Food and beverage (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) were available during the entire day. While the beverage options were truly impressive, I wasn’t very impressed with the variety of food options for breakfast in the lounge, compared to the wide variety of options offered at the restaurant near the lobby
