For years, one of the easiest answers in points and miles was simple: transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt. That answer is now getting more complicated, starting October 1, 2026. Chase is changing the value proposition on the Sapphire Preferred. Going forward, Sapphire Preferred cardholders will no longer transfer Ultimate Rewards points to World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio. Instead, the ratio will move to 4:3.

For existing Sapphire Preferred cardholders, the change takes effect October 1, 2026. That means 100,000 Chase points will no longer become 100,000 Hyatt points. They will become 75,000 Hyatt points.

That is a 25% haircut. So the obvious question is: should Sapphire Preferred cardholders transfer Chase points to Hyatt before October 1?

Why This Chase Change Matters

Hyatt has long been the crown jewel of Chase Ultimate Rewards. Marriott transfers rarely made sense. IHG transfers were usually poor value. Airline transfers could be great, but availability was inconsistent. Hyatt was different.

The award chart was clearer, the redemption values were often strong, and premium hotels could deliver outsized value compared to cash rates. That made Hyatt the most reliable high-value transfer partner in the Chase ecosystem. The new 4:3 ratio changes that math. A 30,000-point Hyatt award that used to require 30,000 Chase points will soon require 40,000 Chase points from a Sapphire Preferred account.

Earning Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

At the moment, many Chase credit cards are offering welcome bonuses that will help you quickly rack up Chase Ultimate Rewards points at a rapid pace. Particularly, the limited time offers on business credit cards are enticing, offering you the opportunity to earn up to 200,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Card Name Welcome Bonus+ Offer Link Annual Fee
Chase Sapphire Preferred 75,000 Points $95
Chase Sapphire Reserve 100,000 Points $795
Chase Ink Business Preferred 100,000 Points $95
Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business 200,000 Points $795
Ink Business Cash 100,000 Points $0
Ink Business Unlimited 100,000 Points $0

No Need To Transfer In Panic

Yes, the October 1 deadline matters. But that does not mean you should blindly transfer your entire Chase balance to Hyatt before the change. Hyatt points are useful, but they are not cash. Once you move Chase points to Hyatt, you cannot move them back.

That matters even more now because Hyatt redemptions have become less predictable. Award pricing can vary meaningfully by property, category and peak dates. High-end Hyatt awards have become more expensive, and the range of value you can get from Hyatt points is wider than it used to be.

In some cases, Hyatt points can still produce excellent value. In other cases, you may be redeeming into a mediocre cents-per-point outcome while giving up the flexibility of Chase points. That is not a good trade.

When A Pre-October Transfer Makes Sense

I would consider transferring Chase points to Hyatt before October 1 if you already have a specific redemption in mind. That means you have checked availability, confirmed the dates, compared the cash rate, and know the award price. If you are looking at a real stay where Hyatt points clearly beat cash, then transferring before the deadline makes sense.

This is especially true for expensive city hotels, peak-season resorts, or properties where cash rates are high and award rates remain reasonable. In those cases, locking in the 1:1 transfer ratio before it disappears can save a meaningful number of Chase points.

When You Should Wait

I would not transfer speculatively just because the deadline is approaching. If you do not know where you want to stay, when you want to travel, or whether award space will exist, keeping points with Chase may be smarter. Ultimate Rewards points are valuable because they are flexible. They can be used for airline transfers, other hotel partners, travel redemptions, or future opportunities. Hyatt points are valuable only inside Hyatt. That narrower use case is fine when you have a plan. It is risky when you are simply reacting to a devaluation.

The Pundit’s Mantra

The October 1 Hyatt transfer change is a real devaluation for Sapphire Preferred cardholders. There is no way around that. A 4:3 ratio makes Hyatt redemptions 25% more expensive from the Chase side. That weakens one of the best features of the Sapphire Preferred. However, I would not panic transfer points just to preserve the old ratio.

My strategy would be simple: identify real Hyatt stays before October 1, compare the award price against the cash rate, and transfer only what you need. If you have a strong redemption, act before the deadline. If you do not, keep your points flexible. Chase points sitting in Chase are still optionality. Chase points stranded in Hyatt are a bet.

Also, if you’re not sure you can always wait and then upgrade to the Chase Sapphire Reserve card in the future in case you still want that 1:1 transfer ratio. 1. Hyatt is a better choice but it is inconsistent. They sometimes give 5000 point redemptions on single nights but you need to pay cash for other nights. That would be fine except the rate does not make sense. A 5000 point night night followed by a 220 dollar night plus taxes then followed by a 5000 point night. It seems intentional.
