If you’ve been thinking about applying for a Chase Sapphire card, it may be worth checking your Chase account before submitting an application. As first spotted by Doctor of Credit, Chase is showing some cardholders targeted welcome offers that are significantly higher than the current public offers. The most eye-catching examples include up to 175,000 Ultimate Rewards points on the Sapphire Reserve and up to 125,000 points on the Sapphire Preferred. These appear to be targeted offers rather than publicly available promotions.

Targeted Chase Sapphire Offers

The important word here is targeted. Not every Chase customer will see these elevated bonuses. Some people may continue to see the standard public offer, while others may receive substantially larger bonuses after signing into their Chase account or through personalized marketing.

That isn’t new. Banks regularly use targeted offers to attract specific customers. What is interesting is the size of these bonuses. A potential 175,000-point Sapphire Reserve offer would represent one of the largest welcome bonuses Chase has ever shown on the card. Likewise, a 125,000-point Sapphire Preferred offer is significantly more attractive than what many applicants would normally expect.

Here’s what the offers look like:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve: 175,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred: 125, Chase Ultimate Rewards points

Should You Wait?

If you need the card today because you have a large purchase coming up or want immediate access to the benefits, there is always a risk in waiting for something better that may never appear. However, if your application is not time-sensitive, I think it makes sense to spend a few minutes checking whether Chase has targeted you for a higher offer.

Welcome bonuses are the easiest points you will ever earn. If you qualify for an additional 50,000 or 75,000 Ultimate Rewards points simply by applying through a different offer, that is worth the extra effort.

Don’t Chase An Offer You Can’t Get

That said, I would avoid obsessing over targeted offers. We’ve seen this happen before with Chase, Amex and Capital One. Some customers receive extraordinary offers while others never see them, despite trying different browsers, devices or links.

If Chase hasn’t targeted you, there may not be much you can do. It is also worth remembering that a larger welcome bonus should not be the only reason you choose a card. You still need to be comfortable with the annual fee, spending requirement and long-term value proposition.

A 175,000-point bonus is fantastic. Paying hundreds of dollars in annual fees for a card that doesn’t fit your travel habits is not.

The Pundit’s Mantra

Targeted offers are always exciting because they remind us that public offers are not necessarily the best offers. If you are planning to apply for either Sapphire card, I would absolutely check your Chase account first to see whether you have been targeted for one of these elevated bonuses.
