Review: Air Canada A220 Economy from New York to Toronto

Air Canada A220

Background and Booking

I was flying to Toronto for a quick weekend trip last weekend, and Air Canada had the best time/aircraft that I wanted to fly on. I booked the fare class “Economy Standard”, which was one above the lowest basic option, which included a carry-on bag but charges for changes/cancellations. This was my first time on the Air Canada A220, having only been on the Air Canada Boeing 737 MAX 8 in Business. I have also tried Business on Air Canada Jazz’s E175 and Air Canada Rouge’s A319.

If I wanted to choose a seat before online check-in, which would be 24 hours prior to departure, the cost was anywhere from $26 to $32 to choose a seat. At check-in, I could choose any seat for free, or upgrade to Business Class for $157. Considering the flight was so short, I opted to stay in my Economy Class Seat.

I attached my United MileagePlus number to my reservation, and since I’m Premier Silver, I got a better boarding zone (Group 3), as well as a free checked bag. But, no advanced seat selection.

At the Airport & Boarding

Air Canada departs from LaGuardia’s Terminal B, which is quite nice and has plenty of lounges. I accessed the Capital One Landing before my flight, and had a nice tapas-style meal. I wrote a review of my previous visit to the Landing from last month. If you’re interested in reading, you can do so here.

Boarding started 35 minutes prior to our scheduled departure, and we ended up leaving the gate 5 minutes early.

Air Canada A220 Economy Class Seat

The Air Canada A220 features 137 seats in a two-class cabin configuration. This includes 12 Business Class seats (2×2 layout) and 125 Economy Class seats (2×3 layout).

Air Canada A220 Seating

The Air Canada A220 Economy Seat offers a seat pitch of 30”, except for preferred seats at rows 12, 19-21, which have more legroom due to being at the bulkheads or at the exit rows. My standard seat (15D) had ample legroom for a short flight.

I love the A220 since there is only one middle seat per row. And, on this flight, I got lucky and had an empty middle seat next to me!

They actually have nice 10-inch personal IFE screens at every seat, which surprised me, and it has plenty of movies, TV shows, and audio for such a short flight. How nice! USB-C and A charging was available, as well as a power outlet.

The Flight

Our plane was quite new, having only been delivered in December 2025. Oddly, for such a new plane, the overhead bins seemed poorly designed, and bags had to be laid flat, so the bins would fill up fast, and I had to put my carry-on a few rows back.

We had a pretty light load. I would say that the flight was about half full. Our flight took off about 15 minutes after our scheduled departure.

In-flight Wi-Fi was supported by Bell, and it was free for Aeroplan Members, United MileagePlus, and Business Class travelers. You’ll have to ensure your ticket links to Aeroplan or United MileagePlus, since it only asked for my seat number and last name. Alternatively, you could buy a flight pass for 8 CAD, or 800 Aeroplan points.

Shortly after cruising altitude, they came by with headphones for purchase, and then the snack/beverage cart.

A complimentary cookie snack or pretzels were offered as well as a choice of soft drink.

The flight was pretty smooth, and we ended up arriving at the gate about 10 minutes early.

The Verdict

Overall, the Air Canada A220 Economy experience provided a nice short hop from New York to Toronto. The complimentary Wi-Fi and nice seatback entertainment will make the flight go by super fast. I wouldn’t hesitate to fly this route and aircraft on Air Canada again.
