American Express appears to have removed the Green Card from its website. As first flagged by Doctor of Credit, the American Express Green Card is no longer showing as available on the Amex website. That is notable because this comes shortly after Amex began notifying cardholders that the card would be renamed the American Express Classic Green Card.

That does not necessarily mean the card is dead. But it does make the timing interesting.

Amex Green Refresh Imminent?

Previously, the American Express Green Card had its own application page and was available for new applicants. Now, the card appears to have been removed from the Amex website. That means new applicants may no longer be able to apply through the standard public Amex channel.

This follows an earlier Doctor of Credit report that Amex was changing the card’s name to the American Express Classic Green Card, with the change expected to take effect on August 20, 2026. At the time, the reported understanding was that benefits would remain the same, but the name change raised speculation that Amex could be preparing a broader refresh or a separate new Green product.

Now that the card has disappeared from the website, that speculation becomes more interesting.

American Express often makes small changes before larger product updates. Sometimes that means new branding. Sometimes it means a new design. Sometimes it means a full refresh with new benefits, credits, annual fee changes or eligibility restrictions. The Green Card has not had a major refresh since 2019, when Amex repositioned it as a travel and dining-focused Membership Rewards card.

Since then, the card has felt increasingly overlooked. The Platinum Card has received multiple updates. The Gold Card has become central to Amex’s food and grocery strategy. Meanwhile, the Green Card has sat in an awkward middle position: useful on paper, but not exactly front-of-mind for most consumers. Removing the card from the website could mean Amex is preparing something new.

What Existing Cardholders Should Know

For now, existing Green Card cardholders should not assume anything has changed unless Amex formally communicates it. A card disappearing from the public website does not automatically mean existing accounts are being closed, converted or losing benefits.

It mainly affects new applications. Still, if you currently hold the Green Card, this is worth watching. If Amex is preparing a refresh, existing cardholders may eventually see new terms, a new name or a product-change path.

The Pundit’s Mantra

The Green Card being removed from the Amex website, combined with the upcoming “Classic Green Card” name change, strongly suggests Amex may be preparing some kind of shift.

Maybe the current Green Card is being retired for new applicants. Maybe a refreshed version is coming. Maybe Amex is simply cleaning up its product lineup before launching something else.

We do not know yet. What we do know is that the Green Card has been due for attention for a while. The last major refresh was in 2019, and the card has increasingly felt like the forgotten middle child of the Membership Rewards family.
