United Airlines has announced they will introduce premium economy on international routes later in 2018. This brings them in line with American Airlines and Delta Air Lines who already offer this product from the United States.
This is a popular product for people who would like a little extra comfort on long flights, without the expense of business class tickets. It costs more, but how much more is common?
Premium Economy At American And Delta
American Airlines offer seats with 38 inch pitch, a larger touchscreen and noise cancelling headphones. In addition, there is free baggage and priority boarding plus a better meal service. This is similar to other carriers, offering a genuine class above standard economy.
Delta Air Lines offer something similar, with more space, more recline, plated meals and a dedicated flight attendant in their Premium Select cabin. All of this is enhances comfort for long haul travel.
How Much More Is Charged?
From my own perspective, I think premium economy is great value when it is 1.5 times the price of an economy class ticket. This is reasonable for the extra leg room and other benefits you receive.
Is It Worth It?
In short, absolutely – especially on very long flights. On board, the service is usually better and by that I mean the meals and the attention from the crew.
When it comes to the seat, you actually have a much better chance to sleep in a larger seat situated in a smaller and more intimate cabin. It makes the world of difference on arrival, leaving you feeling much more fresh and ready to tackle the day ahead.
Overall Thoughts
Many airlines are removing international first class altogether, which means the three classes are now business, premium economy and economy class. Looking at it, premium economy is similar to what international business class was prior to the introduction of flat beds. In actual fact, it is usually a seat that is close enough to what is offered domestically in business class or first class.
Once again, if you are looking at booking flights in this cabin, try to snag seats that are around 1.5 times the price of the economy ticket on the same flight. That is good value.
