We’re living in surreal times. Not too long ago, we used to marvel at stunning pictures of scenic places from around the world and then look to accomplish those travel goals using our miles and points. In a matter of a few months, we’ve seen the world truly turn upside down. We’re all now looking at which countries are imposing travel restrictions. Every few weeks, we see a new travel advisory put out which suddenly puts a spanner in the works. Now, it seems like NY state is moving ahead with its plan to place restrictions on travel into NY state from 31 U.S states.

NY State Travel Restrictions

NY State is responding to the surging numbers in other states. Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the order is aimed at protecting NY state from another surge in cases.

As infection rates increase in 41 other states, our numbers continue to steadily decline, thanks to the hard work of New Yorkers and our incremental, data-driven opening. Yesterday, we had our lowest death toll since the pandemic began – and with no fatalities in New York City. While today’s numbers are encouraging, we must remain vigilant.

NY state’s website displays the full list of 31 states that face the restrictions and also shows the criteria for adding a state to the list.

The quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a 7-day rolling average or a state with a 10 percent or higher positivity rate over a 7-day rolling average.

Here are all the states that are subject to restrictions. You can read the entire travel advisory here.

The Pundit’s Mantra

In a nutshell, you can still travel to NY if you live in any of the states listed above. However, you’ll have to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. I won’t be surprised if other states adopt similar measures in order to protect themselves from another wave of the virus, especially once they determine that they’ve got the spread under control.
