Short answer = yes. The more important part of this question is tied to what type of business you actually have and how you might qualify for a business credit card using your eBay side hustle!
My good friend Bryce over at 10xTravel.com published a piece today about this topic and I thought it would be a good time to let you all in on the “secret” that you don’t need to have a full-blown brick and mortar business to qualify.
I recently applied for the Chase Marriott and SPG Business credit cards using my online award booking consultancy AwardBandit. In my application I had to provide my social security number since I identify and am registered as a sole proprietor. Additionally, I had to provide my annual revenue figures, web address, number of employees, type of services, etc.
I can tell you that I don’t make that much money, I have zero employees and I sell consulting services which are typically deemed as a higher risk business type from the bank’s perspective. After filling out the application and pressing submit, I got the “We need more time to review!” notification, which for me has historically meant a denial.
About two days later I received a welcome e-mail congratulating me on my new cards!
Bottom Line
Obviously I have it easy because I do have a registered business, but that doesn’t mean your eBay side hustle won’t qualify you. Any attempt or effort to provide goods or services in exchange for compensation is considered a business, whether you have an Employer Identification Number or not.
Be wary, though, that if you are racking up thousands of dollars in non-business related transactions and start requesting credit line increases and are just acting flat out shady, the bank might look into your account a bit more closely.
With that said, business credit cards present a fantastic opportunity to increase your point balances. I recently hit the 80,000 Marriott card bonus and am pursuing this new 80,000 point bonus with the Marriott Business card.
