The Egyptair Alioth lounge has been touted by bloggers as the best one in Terminal 3 in Cairo. I guess that depends on when you get there. When I arrived around 11:30pm, the desk staff actively told me to go to the Gienah lounge closer to my gate.
As I’d heard it was the best, I asked to come in anyway and to shrugs from the staff, I was permitted entry. Well, that was certainly a bit of a mistake on my part and here’s why.
Why go to another lounge?
As it turned out, one side of the lounge was roped off. I assume that was the good side, as I certainly wasn’t impressed at all with the area that remained open. That being said, as a dining area it was functional and very bright.
Overall Thoughts
Clearly you should listen when the lounge staff direct you to another lounge. Without saying so, they were silently indicating that things would be better elsewhere, and they were correct.
I spent just 20 minutes or so in this lounge before heading to the Gienah lounge. That had a much more extensive food offering available and all in all was more what I would expect.

In fairness, having some idea why the people advise a certain lounge helps a lot when deciding what to do. If I’m unfamiliar with the lounge options and I’m directed to what seems like an odd choice I’ll ask why. Last year my wife and I were on our first visit to London and I was advised when checking in with American to head to the Flagship lounge. I thanked the lady and said that we would be using the Cathay first class lounge instead. She commented that I’d done my research, which caught a chuckle from my wife who deals with my eternal attention to travel things with – mostly – good humor.
Fair enough. And yes, in your particular case, the Cathay first class lounge is nicer than the AA one, so that is a good call all round 🙂
I was there in 2023 and was similarly underwhelmed. Not sure why people say this is the best lounge in CAI, unless the other ones are even worse 🙂
I thought the Gienah lounge was better – it certainly had a far more extensive and varied food offering. It’s all a bit puzzling in Cairo 🙂
