Review: The lovely Land’s End Boutique Hotel in Sliema, Malta

a building with many balconies

When planning my trip to Malta, a work colleague asked a friend of his where I should stay. Sliema was the answer, and so I went looking online for a decent hotel. The Land’s End Boutique Hotel caught my eye, but I thought it a little expensive so kept looking.

Eventually I found a deal on Booking.com, where I prepaid and it was booked through some shadowy intermediary of theirs. In the end, it was €499.00 for the four night stay, which is quite pricey for Malta. Luckily it turned out to be worth it!

A Room At Land’s End

Once my flight landed, I was quickly into the €20 taxi from the airport, which took about 10-15 minutes to get to the hotel. I was checked in efficiently, advised the tap water was not for drinking, and that there were water fountains on every second floor to refill the glass bottles in the fridge. I headed up to my sea view room on the fourth floor and found it to be quite nice.

As I was travelling alone, there was plenty of space, so I quickly unpacked my things. The wardrobe contained a robe with slippers, as well as a safe and I was able to hang all my things. There are a couple of chairs in the room and I found the Wi-Fi to be fast. Air conditioning worked well and automatically turns off when you go out on the balcony. An interesting touch, touted as being more environmentally conscious.

That View Though!

Considering the location of the hotel, which is very close to the ferry to Valetta, there was no way I was not going to get a sea view room. I arrived after sunset, so imagine my pleasure when I saw this view from the balcony.

Balconies contain a pair of chairs, a low table and an ashtray. There is a fairly busy road in front of the hotel, but the sound proofing is perfect via the heavy balcony door. You don’t notice the cars at all.

Room Service

The only black mark I have against this hotel is the room service. There is a restaurant on the first floor of the hotel called Hammett’s Monastik and one night I ordered room service from there. For Fried Gbejna as a starter and Braised Beef as a main, I paid €33.00. Now, it arrived in 20 minutes, which was promising, but otherwise it was a disappointment.

My Fried Gbenja was fine, but the beef, while tasty, was lukewarm to cold. I was also unimpressed with getting two sets of forks and spoons to eat it with (a knife would have been nice!) plus it came with a thin layer of mash and not much else. It was probably the worst room service meal I’ve ever had a hotel. Edible, but who wants cold braised beef?

What About The Pool?

The 11th floor of the hotel has an indoor pool, with views overlooking the city. It’s a really nice spot to relax for a swim and when I visited I was the only person up there. Bliss!

There is a sauna and steam room but they are only in operation between 4pm and 8pm, though you can request them to be turned on earlier. I didn’t bother, as I had already gone swimming by the time I realised they needed to be requested.

Overall Thoughts

The Land’s End Boutique Hotel in Sliema is a place I’d happily stay again. You can’t beat the location and the sea view rooms are really worth it. I saw inside a room across the hall when the maids were at work, and their view was a wall opposite, so definitely fork out the extra.

Staff at the hotel were really lovely, particularly the ladies on reception when I was leaving. Good fun all round! I drank tons of the water from the water station on my floor and had no ill effects, so all good there too.

Location wise, it’s close to everything. I ate from nearby food trucks (“Thais-ty”), a Peruvian place in a mall which was well reviewed (inevitably called Macchu Picchu), Cinnabon and even McDonald’s (for a midnight McFlurry). There are lots and lots of places to eat, shop and be merry in the area.
