Beware: Can you Get the IHG Premier card bonus if you have an IHG Select Card?

Chase came out with a 2 brand new IHG card products just last month.  One of those products is the IHG Premier Rewards Club card.  I wrote about why the new card made sense despite the free night devaluation.  For those who had been following, IHG/Chase reversed the poorly planned change for IHG Select cardmembers.  The certificate is uncapped if it was issued before May 1, 2019.

Bonus Points Did Not Post for IHG Premier Card

UPDATE (6/9):  The 80,000 points posted in the next statement.  It is considered a new product.

I’ve been an IHG Select cardholder for a long time.  As someone who stays at IHG properties, I decided to spring for the new IHG Premier card ($89 annual fee).

The Offer

I completed my spend (over $2,000 in purchases + $89 in annual fee) and my statement recently closed. Unfortunately, the 80,000 bonus points did not post on my first statement.

I will be the first to admit that this is a fairly premature development at this point. It is possible that my last purchase that put me over the spending threshold may have put me too close to the statement cut date (2 days prior).

There isn’t any reason why the 80,000 bonus points should not have posted, since this is a brand new product.

Potential Cause for Concerns?

While I don’t have a lot of Chase cards, I know that Chase is fairly consistent in posting earned rewards on the statement in which the requirement is completed.

I’ve already opened a support ticket with Chase.  It might also just be a matter of waiting through the next statement to see if the bonus points automatically post.  While some of the other benefits associated with the new Premier card are good, one of the compelling reasons for getting the new card is the 80,000 bonus points.

There aren’t many data points out on this card yet because it’s such a new card.  If the bonus isn’t awarded because I’m an existing Select cardholder, I’m not going to be a very happy camper with Chase.

If you are a Select cardholder and on the fence about applying for this card, beware. You may want to wait until a few more data points come in before applying for the card.

Any other IHG Select cardholders who had data points about this card?

  1. I have the same data point as you actually. I met the minimum spend, with the final amount crediting a few days before statement close. No 80k bonus on my statement which closed yesterday. I also had the original IHG card, but recently churned it a couple of months before they announced the Premier.

  2. Hmmm.. this is a bit concerning.
I have had the IHG Select Card for the past 3 years and I just got my new IHG Premier card today. and I already completed my spend (large hospital bill). I’ll check in a few weeks to see if the 80K points posted.

    1. We did have a datapoint upthread that it posted for someone with Select card, so we should be ok. I also heard back from Chase. They have it on record that the offer is on my account and and that I have met the requirements. “Please allow six to eight weeks for the bonus to post”, provided:

      – You haven’t received a new cardmember bonus on this account in the past 24 months.
      – Your account is open and not in default when we post the bonus.

Neither of which is a problem. I will wait it out, and I update again when/if it posts in a couple of weeks in the next statement.

  3. My husband and I both applied for and got the new card. We hold the old card as well. My husband completed his spend within about two weeks. I was on his IHG account this morning and the 80,000 just posted. (We haven’t even paid the bill yet.)

    1. That is wonderful news – same situation. I still hold (and plan to continue) to hold the old Select card. In that case, I’m just going (for now) with the theory that my spending threshold perhaps cut too close to the statement cut date. Hopefully, it would post in the next statement. Thanks for your comment and data point, Laura!
