Hotel & Lounge Review: Grand Hyatt Taipei, Taiwan

HIGHLIGHTS: Grand Hyatt Taipei

The Grand Hyatt Taipei is a short walk from the major tourist destinations of Taipei 101 and its Din Tai Fung restaurant, as well as the Breeze – Xinyi mall. It was much nicer than I expected, I think the “Grand” part of the Grand Hyatt would make sense. The lounge was exceptional as it tends to be in Asia, with great food for both breakfast and evening hors d’oeuvres.

LOBBY & CHECK-IN

This lobby is massive, and the stories are that it is haunted and has special scrolls to ward off bad spirits. Interesting. Checkin desk is inside, all the way in the back left corner. Having a low Hyatt status allowed me a special line, which was nice. They were able to upgrade me they said, but it seemed like a normal King room. Also, I got two “drink” coupons with my stay, valid at any of their bars or establishments. However, they did not point out that the coupons are for non-alcoholic drinks only, so I was annoyed when I tried to use them.

Additionally, I applied one of my Explorist Club Access awards for this stay, so they gave me those details. Coincidentally our room was on the same floor as the club lounge.

ROOM

This room was quite nice, with a large, expansive bathroom, furnished with tub and stand shower. There was also some welcome fruit that we did not eat, but it was a nice touch.

HOTEL SPACE / AMBIANCE

The hotel was bustling with people, a combination of groups, families, and professionals. It had a very regal yet touristy air, and checking out both the lounge as well as the club area where they played various songs from different nationalities and languages. Many of those songs were over 30-40 years old, so I had to look them up, like a blast from the past. My drink coupons were nonalcoholic so I redeemed them for tea & orange juice. Quite disappointing.

FOOD & DRINK

Water in the room, nonalcoholic drink coupons were acceptable, but what really stood out was the lounge. We made sure to go check out the concierge lounge, where someone is always sitting outside at the desk, manning the entrance.

In the afternoon, they have hors d’oeuvres, of which I could have made a meal, as well as complimentary beverages and drinks. Breakfast had a similarly large spread of items, and I am glad I woke up early and made it there in time. It ranges from American and Asian items, so there should be something for everyone.

FITNESS

This fitness center is a little cramped, with separate sections for cardio versus weight machines & free weights. It was a bit crowded when I went, late in the evening.

MISCELLANEOUS

Their internet was abysmal, which is a problem, but thankfully I was only there for a few hours in the property. I would definitely come back and stay here, for a mere 15,000 Hyatt points, it’s a great deal. Cash rates ran from $150-250, which isn’t a great deal. I would like to explore more of the Grand Hyatt Taipei lounge and eating establishments, but that shall have to wait until next time!
