NEW YORK – On an extremely hot evening in New York last month, I met up with longtime reader and road warrior John Ruda at the Conrad New York’s rooftop lounge to talk about – what else – travel! We’d been looking forward to meeting for a long time, but we were also eager to experience the Conrad’s 16th-floor outdoor venue and its boozy popsicles that I’d written about two years prior while at USA Today.
Naturally, I took one for the team and ordered one!
At $18 a pop (literally), the boozy popsicle didn’t disappoint. Two flavors were already sold out, but I was happy with the one I ordered. The pop I ordered (above) consisted of fresh strawberries and tequila, and it was served inside a glass of prosecco poured from tap. Either one of the two alone would’ve been great; combined, the mix was outstanding.
I confess, though, that I didn’t wait for the pop to melt in the prosecco. Given the pre-sunset and my post-subway ride temperature, I consumed the pop first – and then went for the sparkling vino.

Traveler tip: Getting to the outdoor bar, by the way, was a little tricky. When you get out of the elevator, you must walk to your left to find a simple glass-covered door. There weren’t any big signs that I recall, so you just feel your way – and find it. At some hours I suspect you’ll likely just follow other people, because when we were there, the place was packed – and it become increasingly crowded as sunset time approached.
When you’re standing up (and the hedging isn’t blocking your view), you can soak up fabulous views of the Hudson River, Statue of Liberty and sunset.
The hotel used to be an Embassy Suites until owner Goldman Sachs ordered a luxurious upgrade.
