Five Things I Loved About My Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady Cruise

Takeoff Note: I was invited to try out Virgin Voyages and only had to pay port expenses and taxes. But, the opinions expressed in this post are entirely those of mine and weren't subject to review by the cruise line or any external entity.

Background:

I wrote about all the different aspects in detail of my Virgin Voyage aboard the Scarlet Lady, and you can check out those posts below. Overall, the Scarlet Lady cruise was great, and can’t wait to try one again. If you want a short synopsis, this post goes over five things I loved about Virgin Voyages and five things I wish they would improve on.

Virgin Voyages Cruise Report

What I Loved:

1) Dining

The food options were amazing and were of a solid restaurant quality that you would find in a major city. I loved not having a main dining room, as often those start to get boring where everything tastes the same towards the end of the voyage. The restaurants were better than the paid specialty dining I had in Holland America and Royal Caribbean. And, the dining is included in the cost of Virgin Voyages! My favorites were The Wake, which was the steakhouse, and Pink Agave, which was the Mexican restaurant on board.

2) Hammock

I loved the hammock on the Sea Terrace in balcony cabins on the Scarlet Lady. It is so fun & relaxing to sit in the hammock and watch the ocean view.

3) Smoke Free Casino

I love that the casino is smoke-free! It was a breath of fresh air, and it allowed me to spend more time in the casino without having my clothes smell like smoke.

4) Service / Flexible Reservations

I liked how the service was generally very helpful, and they were quite flexible in allowing us to move our dinner reservations despite slots not showing in the app.

5) Free Tips, Soft Drinks and Wi-Fi

I love how Virgin Voyages doesn’t try to nickel and dime you. Tips are all included in your fare, soft drinks, and standard Wi-Fi. Amazing, and much different than most of the mainstream cruise lines.

And here’s five things I wish they improve upon:

1) The Show Offerings

The main headline shows on Virgin Voyages fell a bit short. The Ship Show wasn’t the most entertaining, and the acrobatic Duel Reality fell flat. I think having a Broadway show could have been nice, or something more creative and tantalizing.

2) Only One Nightclub/Party At Night

Considering that the ship is supposed to be more hip & fun than others, I feel like there should be extra venues for nightclubs. Particularly on the last night, only the Manor was open at 11 pm and played 70’s music. Not quite the hip vibe, and when we went to check it out, it was deserted. I think it would have been nice if the Red Room was open too, and had a more Vegas Club-style vibe for the last night.

3) Key West

Considering that Virgin Voyages is supposed to be appealing to a hip, younger crowd, I don’t think Key West is a great fit with the vibe. I would love to see another nearby island destination instead.

4) The App

While the app was very helpful in making reservations for dining, shows, and checking the activities on board, it often glitched out and had to be closed and restarted. It was a bit annoying at times, as I also had to redownload it when it errored out three times. I think a quick IT fix should bring it back to pristine condition.

5) The Cycling Class I Took

Cycle Room

While the cycling room was quite nice with beautiful ocean views, I don’t think the instructor for our spin class was good. He set the resistance and output ranges much too high and the ranges too large.

The Verdict:

Overall, I think the things I loved about my Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady Cruise outweighed the aspects I wish they improved upon. I’m excited to try out Virgin Voyages again in the near future!
