Emirates ending first class partner awards with Alaska miles

manufactured spending ban

When I first started dipping my toes into the world of miles and points, I started using different types of airline miles to book tickets. As I went further, I started gaining more knowledge about alliances and how lucrative partner award could be. If you’ve been in this game long enough, you’d know that using Alaska Airlines miles to book Emirates had been a favorite for many. However, that perk is now being partly nerfed.

Emirates First Class Awards no longer bookable with Alaska Miles

As Alaska ramps up its efforts to join OneWorld on March 31st, it will also be the last day when you can use Alaska Airlines miles to book an award flight on Emirates First Class. A Reddit user first pointed it out on one of the forums. However, you can also see the update on the Alaska Airlines website.

Book your First Class award travel with Emirates by March 31, 2021. Beginning April 1, 2021, Emirates will no longer allow partner access to First Class award bookings. Mileage Plan members can continue to redeem on the Emirates’ award-winning Economy Class and Business Class.

You can still continue to book flights in Economy and Business Class on Emirates flights using your Alaska Airlines miles. However, they’ll still be subject to the usual terms and conditions.

Flights must fall within the eligible flight number range below, and your flight must be marketed and operated by Emirates. Codeshare flights marketed by Emirates and operated by another carrier are not eligible to earn miles. Ticket has to be on Emirates ticket stock to qualify. Emirates award flights booked into the fare classes above are not eligible to earn miles or elite qualifying miles or segments.

The Pundit’s Mantra

While it’s disappointing to see this go away, it’s not that great a loss as this sweet spot had already been devalued greatly over the years. The partner award cost suddenly jumped from 90,000 Miles to anywhere between 150,000 to 180,000 Miles on many popular routes, thereby already making is less of a ‘deal’ compared to what it used to be.
