A problem with pilot rosters is causing flight cancellations at Ryanair over the next six weeks. It is reported that around 400,000 customers are going to be affected.

This is less than 2% of the Ryanair flight schedule and is estimated to cost the airline under €25 million. Coverage in the news about this is quite extensive so anyone affected should be aware of what is happening.

Flight Cancellations

A full list of the flight cancellations is now available on the Ryanair web site. This removes any uncertainty for passengers scheduled to fly in the near future.

In order to minimise the disruption, services are cancelled on routes with multiple daily flights. This will make it easier for people to switch to an alternate time on the same day.

Refunds and Compensation

Affected passengers are able to change flights for free on the Ryanair web site and the same page also allows people to cancel their flights and receive a full refund.

BBC Breakfast report that if your outbound is cancelled and your inbound is still operating, you will be able to get a refund for both flights.

Full details on how compensation works is provided on the Ryanair web site. It outlines the European Union’s EU261 rules for Ireland and details the airlines obligation in the event of flight cancellations.

Overall Thoughts

Pilots are on record stating the real reason for the cancellations is that Norwegian are hiring Ryanair pilots leading to a shortfall. The airline categorically states it is a roster issue with many pilots needing to take leave at once.

Whatever the story it is an unusual and interesting one in the Ryanair story. Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
