Is this the best part of the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Lounge in Doha?

a room with red chairs and laptops

When connecting through Doha in business class, one of the highlights is using the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Lounge. Some people think the best part is the restaurant, but I think it’s something else.

Since the cabin crew are very good at looking after their business class passengers, it makes the restaurant a little redundant. You’re so well fed and watered on the flight that more food is not at all what you want.

Is It The Game Room?

There is a game room available for people to, well… play games. I passed through at the start of 2021 during the pandemic at about 5am, so nobody was using it.

It’s a weirdly beige room, and it’s probably a whole lot more engaging with a bunch of people inside, playing games. Therefore, this is not my favourite part of the lounge.

Perhaps It Is The Toilets?

One thing you can say about Qatar Airways, both on board the plane and on the ground: they always have spotless toilet facilities. The design is also easy on the eyes.

I like how you can dry your hands on individual towels, something I first came across in 2008 when flying Royal Jordanian. While the bathrooms are great, they’re not the best part of the lounge.

Is It The General Facilities?

The Al Mourjan Lounge is very large, with the restaurant above at one end, and a more informal dining area on the ground level at the other end. In between there is a business centre and various seating areas.

You have places to sleep, sit and relax, plus there is complimentary WiFi throughout the airport which is fast. Even this is not the highlight for me.

So What Is The Best Part?

The showers! These are located through the ground floor dining area, inexplicably right next to the quiet area. You hand over your boarding pass to the desk lady and it is then handed back. Your Qatar Airways app will notify you when a shower room is available.

On my visit I had to wait about 30 minutes or so for a shower to become available. After that, a lovely shower using Rituals products got me prepped and ready for my next flight.

Overall Thoughts

Everyone raves about the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Lounge and it is one of the best business class lounges in the world. The main reason is the sit down restaurant, a feature usually reserved for first class lounges only. Cleanliness and service from the staff is world class, which is also worth mentioning.

I have never really taken to the lounge, and I still feel the same way. It will never be, for me, a lounge I list as a favourite. That is just down to my personal preference. I enjoy the cosier feel of the Cathay Pacific lounges far more, as they are much more my taste.

  1. Do you need to put in a request for the showers through the app or front desk?
Does it automatically pop up. in the app?
    Thanks in advance!

    1. You put the request in with the shower attendants who are at the showers, so not the front desk. After that, the notification pops up on the Qatar Airways app automatically. Therefore, make sure you have the app and your booking in it before you go. I was surprised it worked so well, but work it did.

  2. Definitely not the best part, in my opinion. The showers have a total lack of ventilation which means a few seconds after getting out of a refreshing shower, you’re perspiring like an accused on the stand.

    1. Hahaha! Weirdly enough, I remember that from the first time I went through the lounge a few years ago. Maybe something has changed, because I came out feeling fresh this time. To be fair, I also didn’t make it an extremely hot shower, for the reasons you mention, but it worked out just fine.

  3. I prefer any CX lounge to the Al Mourjan, not just The Pier or The Wing at HKG, but even the small ones like at LHR. The food is better too, as the few times I’ve been through Doha, the restaurant offered nothing but a plethora of south Asian dishes. QR’s on-board catering is excellent, so no big loss at the lounge.

    1. I agree, the Cathay Pacific lounges in London Heathrow and Vancouver are just as good as the ones in Hong Kong. You’re right with QR’s on board catering as well. I’m happy enough to eat everything put in front of me on board. I had an especially delicious Beef Bourguignon on my last flight. Could have had five of those! Thanks for the comment.

  4. I’ve never been, although if Alaska allows Asia award flights routing through Doha, I’d love to try it when they join Oneworld. Given the often long connection times – frequently at odd hours I find nap rooms to be extremely valuable. Does the lounge offer some?

    1. There is a quiet area near the showers, where people attempt to sleep. Judging from the snores, I’d say some people found it perfectly acceptable. Otherwise there are those nap chairs I took a picture of that are in a quiet part of the lounge. Hamad International Airport also has an airside transit hotel if your connection is particularly long. In normal times, Qatar Airways also gives a free transit hotel on connections over 8 hours. Hopefully you get to try the lounge in future!
