Just a few days back, I wrote this story describing how three people died aboard a cruise ship due to the outbreak of the hantavirus.

The expedition cruise ship, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions and currently moored off the coast of West Africa, is at the centre of a rare and serious hantavirus outbreak. At least three people among the 147 passengers and crew have died. Four more have been reported ill by the WHO. One patient remains in intensive care in South Africa. Another confirmed case was identified in Zurich.

So what exactly is hantavirus?

Hantavirus is carried by rodents and spreads to humans through contact with urine, droppings, or saliva .According to the CDC, it starts with flu-like symptoms before potentially progressing into severe respiratory distress. The fatality rate is nearly 40%. There’s no specific treatment. Supportive care, think ventilators and oxygen, is the best medicine has to offer right now.

Human-to-human transmission is exceedingly rare, but the WHO isn’t ruling it out here. The leading theory is that passengers were infected before they ever stepped foot on the ship, most likely during activities ashore in Argentina, where the vessel departed from Ushuaia on April 1. The incubation period of one to six weeks lines up with that timeline. The strain in question, Andes hantavirus, is endemic to Chile and Argentina.

What should you do next?

At the moment, the WHO rates the global risk as “low.” Infectious disease specialists quoted by Condé Nast Traveler are emphatic: there is no generalized hantavirus outbreak in Argentina. Typical tourists visiting hotels, restaurants, and standard attractions face minimal risk. This appears to have been a very unusual and isolated exposure event.

However, three passengers are already dead. The Canary Islands government initially pushed back against the ship docking. Moreover, the phrase “everyone in their cabins while disinfection occurs” is not exactly the expedition cruise marketing brochure copy you signed up for.

The Pundit’s Mantra

If you’re cruising anywhere, expedition or otherwise, the lesson here is practical: follow ship health protocols, wash your hands before meals and see the ship’s doctor the moment you feel unwell. Also, if your expedition itinerary involves significant time in remote natural environments, it’s worth a conversation with a travel medicine specialist before you depart.

Moreover, check your cruise line’s force majeure and emergency cancellation policies.
