In a pre-pandemic world, we saw card issuers in an arms race of sorts to come up with some of the flashiest looking credit cards. In this post, I even argued how these are nothing more than marketing gimmicks. Similarly, we saw American Express launch a Rose Gold version. Unsurprisingly, we didn’t see the Rose Gold version around last year. Today, while casually browsing the American Express website, I found the Rose Gold card once again, with the same 60,000 points welcome bonus.
Amex Rose Gold Card
At a very basic level, there’s no difference between the standard Amex Gold card and its Rose Gold version in terms of the welcome bonus or the benefits. However, many folks would find the design of the Rose Gold Card more appealing.
Moreover, if you already have the standard Amex Gold Card, you can still convert to the Rose Gold version by contacting Amex’s customer service.
If you apply for the Rose Gold card now, you’ll get a welcome bonus of 60,000 Membership Rewards points. This welcome bonus has been around for a few weeks now, but we don’t know a specific end date to this limited time offer yet. You’ll earn a welcome bonus of 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $4,000 in the first 6 months of card membership. It’s nice to see that American Express is offering an extra 3 months for people to meet the minimum spend.
The Amex Gold card has discontinued its Airline Fee Credit benefit from 2022. Existing cardholders can still use the benefit for 2021. However, new applicants starting today won’t get the airline fee credit benefit for 2021. Instead, Amex has replaced the benefit with a $120 Uber/Uber Eats credit. Here’s a list of some of the key benefits on the Amex Gold Card.
- 4x points on dining (including takeout and delivery) and grocery spend
- 3x points on flights
- 1x points on all other purchases
- $120 dining credit annually ($10 per month)
- $120 Uber Eats/Uber credit annually ($10 per month)
- No foreign transaction fees

The Pundit’s Mantra
I’ve carried the Amex Gold card for a decade. For me, it’s my go to card for spend on groceries and dining. Moreover, I also switched my card to the Rose Gold version back in 2019.
While the slight design change may be appealing to some, the welcome bonus and points earning categories still make the Amex Gold card a great option for many who want to earn Membership Rewards points on everyday spend.
