Intoxicated passengers on flights pose a significant challenge to the overall safety of everyone on board. The excessive consumption of alcohol within the confines of an aircraft can often lead to unruly behavior. Such behavior often poses a potential threat to the smooth operation of the flight. Instances of a drunk passenger behaving disruptively, engaging in verbal altercations, or even resorting to physical attacks on in-flight crew members have become a growing concern in the airline industry.

While I love to have a drink on board, especially while flying business, I usually limit myself to one. I then switch to some inflight entertainment or to reading a book. These are usually good enough catalysts for a short nap. However, some people certainly tend to go way overboard, like this drunk passenger did on an Emirates flight to Islamabad, Pakistan.

Drunk Passenger attacks crew

This incident happened yesterday and was brought to light by a Pakistani journalist named Amir Mateen, who shared the video of the incident on X (formerly Twitter).

As per the Mirror, the drunk passenger head butted a crew member after having an altercation. In response, the Emirates crew responded by immediately tackling him down and then handcuffing him by using cable ties.

The man was reportedly drunk when he became violent in the business class section of the Emirates jet from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Islamabad, Pakistan, on Sunday night. Cabin crew onboard flight EK614 tried to restrain the rowdy passenger.

But the video shows him headbutt one of the male crew before being pinned down and restrained. The clip then captures an air hostess run over with a pair of emergency black cable ties – kept onboard for handling unruly passengers – to cuff the tourist.

Upon arrival in Islamabad, Pakistan, Pakistani police boarded the plane and arrested him. Emirates crew made sure he was restrained until the plane landed in Pakistan. As per one of the passengers interviewed by the Mirror, the man was seemingly arrested at the airport but would eventually be let go as he was ‘well connected’.

The post on X shows the man on arrival at Islamabad airport.

The Pundit’s Mantra

Over the last few months, we’ve seen plenty of instances where passengers were irritated and got into verbal altercations with crew. However, when a drunk passenger attacks crew, there are very few guesses as to what would happen next. However, in this case, he may have actually escaped with a ‘get out of jail’ card.
