United Airlines to start flying to Adelaide… where?

Adelaide is the state capital of South Australia, a city of almost 1.5 million people. Located 640km from Melbourne, 1,150km from Sydney and 2,130km from Perth, it would make a good air hub, if there was anything much nearby.

Some of the most famous wine country down under is in the region. Names such as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, and Adelaide Hills will be familiar to those who enjoy a tipple.

United Airlines to Adelaide

United Airlines purchased their trans-Pacific network from Pan Am in 1985 for US$750 million. It was the most profitable division of Pan Am, and has gone from strength to strength since. Perhaps if it were not sold, we’d still see the big blue meatball in the sky today.

For a short season running from 11 December 2025 through to March 2026, Adelaide will join the network out of San Francisco. Operated three times per week, flights will be operated by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

UA207 will depart SFO on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, leaving at 23:05, arriving two days later at 09:30. Return services from ADL will fly on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, heading off at 14:55 and arriving stateside at 11:15 the same day. The International Date Line has a lot to answer for here.

It will be a lengthy journey of almost 16 hours to Australia and just an hour less the other way. This is the first time Adelaide will have non-stop service to the USA.

Overall Thoughts

Happy days for citizens of Adelaide and wine lovers everywhere. A non-stop journey will mean people will no longer have to connect in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, which is always nice on such a long journey.

It’s interesting to see United dipping their toes into the bodies in barrels murder city. Hopefully it works out very well and becomes a year round feature in the Star Alliance carrier’s network.

  1. Interesting! Doesn’t Qatar Airways fly to Adelaide too? Noticed that you haven’t had many reviews lately – is there much coming up?

    Thanks

    1. They do, but not to the USA. I think Cathay do or did as well. And yes, there should be a bunch of reviews coming up shortly, as I’m about to go away again. Aer Lingus, Iberia, Ethiopian 🙂
