Just days after announcing plans to greatly increase the number of destinations they serve in the Bay Area, Alaska Airlines is adding more California flights.  Alaska Airlines announced six new routes from San Diego International Airport to destinations across the United States.

The first of these flights begins in August.  The final new San Diego route begins service in mid-December.  All of the new flights from San Diego will be operated by Alaska Airline’s regional affiliate Horizon Airlines.

All of the new San Diego routes will be operated with Alaska Airline’s Embraer 175.  The Embraer 175 is one of Alaska Airline’s newest aircraft.  The E175 is designed for short to medium haul flights with passenger demand that couldn’t fill one of Alaska’s Boeing 737s.  The E175s feature First Class, Premium Class, and Economy Class.

Additionally, a route from San Diego to Mexico City is pending government approval.  In Alaska Airline’s press release, Alaska states that schedules and details regarding the possible Mexico City route will be released in the near future.

Overall

One of the biggest concerns about Alaska Airline’s recent merge with Virgin America was less competition.  Already, this is proving not to be the case.  For many midwesterners, San Diego is a very popular vacation destination.  It only makes sense that, to become “The West Coast’s Premiere Airline”, Alaska Airlines would expand its existing network in San Deigo.

What do you think about Alaska Airline’s recent West Coast expansion?
