Over the last few years, we’ve seen Amex add multiple credits to many of their card products. Amex has followed a predictable pattern. Usually, an Amex credit is with a partner merchant and is split across time frames. For example, the hotel credit on the Plaitnum card is split bi-annually, whereas the Uber credit is monthly, while the Lululemon credit is quarterly. This post by DDG caught my eye and I found Amex’s latest move to be truly bizarre.
New $1,000 Amex Credit
After Amex acquired Resy, Amex has been quick to add Resy specific benefits on their products like the Amex Gold card and the Amex Platinum Card. For example, with the Amex Platinum Card, you get up to $400 in credits each year. This credit is split quarterly, with a maximum of $100 per quarter.
Over the last few years, many in the miles and points space have often bemoaned the ‘couponization’ of credit cards and Amex has indeed been the tredsetter when it comes to this. However, there’s a brand new Amex credit on one of their cards, a massive $1,000 credit and here’s why I find it odd.
The Amex Centurion Card Gets A $1,000 Resy Credit
One of the reasons many people found the ‘couponizaiton’ of Amex’s premium cards really bothersome was because premium products are supposed to be exactly the opposite. They charge a higher premium (also known as annual fees) compared to other products to offer a simple value proposition and higher quality of product and service. However, when Amex refreshed their Platinum cards last year, Amex hiked the fees to $895, but the cards continue to offer a basket of merchant funded credits split across different time frames, which is exactly the opposite of a simple value proposition.
Now, Amex has added a $1,000 Resy credit to the Amex Centurion card as well. It’s not just a simple $1,000 credit. It’s a quarterly credit and one can earn up to a maximum of $250 per quarter.
Now, in case you didn’t know already, the Amex Centurion Card is Amex’s top of the line invitation only card and it charges:
- An Annual Fee of $5,000
- An Initiation Fee of $10,000
The Pundit’s Mantra
I’m really surprised that Amex is now spreading the coupon mania to even a card like the Centurion card. For a cardmember who is already shelling out $15,000 in fees for the first year and then $5,000 thereafter, tracking quarterly credits or maximizing benefits may not be the top most priority.
Also, if Amex continues to do this, I think that it will only erode the overall value of the card, especially its positioning as an ultra premium invitation only card.
What do you think about this new Amex credit on a product like the Centurion card? Do you think it chips away at the exclusivity of the Centurion brand with the addition of these coupons? Tell us in the comments section.
