One of the stranger things in life is that Britain’s easyJet does not fly to the Republic of Ireland. They do serve Northern Ireland though, and have just announced new year round routes from City of Derry Airport to Edinburgh and Liverpool.
Visiting Derry / Londonderry as it’s called (and why the airport code is LDY) is well worth it. I took a flight up there once to see the City Walls, which are some of the best preserved in Europe.
easyJet Derry Schedules
Flights operate on Monday and Friday on both routes, with an additional Thursday flight between Derry and Edinburgh for the four weeks from 12 December to 2 January. Flights are timed to work with business hours, with morning departures from Edinburgh and evening departures from City of Derry. Liverpool features a similar schedule.
This should work well for people who need to travel for work, or those who need to go away on holdiay. It will also work for those wanting a weekend break as well. easyJet operate Airbus A319, A320 and A321 aircraft, so it will ensure a comfortable flight each way.
Overall Thoughts
With the addition of flights to and from Derry, easyJet now operate to three airports in Northern Ireland. The other two are, of course, Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport (which sees a large network operated).
Since Belfast is just two hours from Dublin, anyone wanting to fly the big orange airline can head up there to do just that. However, considering how well connected the Irish capital is, there is probably no real need.
