Tour Review: Hong Kong Foodie Tasting Tours

Hong Kong Foodie offer tasting tours of Hong Kong and as a person who enjoys food I thought I would check these out. The company has a really cute logo and the fact their web page was uncluttered and thoughtfully presented enticed me into making a booking.

They offer three tours that are in completely different locations in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Island features the Central and Sheung Wan Foodie Tour, Kowloon features the Sham Shui Po Foodie tour and the New Territories features the Tai Po Market Foodie tour. During my visit I decided to take two of the tours so let’s see what I thought.

Central and Sheung Wan Foodie Tour

The tours are walking tours and are limited to 12 people. The meeting point is provided to you beforehand and for this tour it was The L Place in Central on Hong Kong Island. The Hong Kong underground rail system – the MTR – is the fastest way to get around so I took that to the stop closest to the meeting point and walked from there. Our guide Yammy was a bubbly student who turned out to be very knowledgeable about Hong Kong.

There are six places to eat on this tour. First was a Wanton Noodle shop and we tried a bowl of noodles which was excellent. Next was a roast meat restaurant where we tried Barbecued Pork Rice.

The portion sizes are very good and as you walk from place to place it doesn’t feel like you’re stuffing yourself. A Fresh Juice Shop was next to sample Sugar Cane Juice which was quite sweet and nice. In between eating we toured Hong Kong. We visited a temple, saw wet markets and Yammy treated us to stories on the history of the place. It was raining gently but this was fine as it was still very warm. The final three places we visited were a Preserved Fruits Shop (think sweets), a restaurant where we ate a great deal of Dim Sum and finally a cake shop where we had Egg Tarts fresh from the oven. These were stunning! Our group bid Yammy farewell after 3.5 hours together, quite satisfied with our day.

Sham Shui Po Foodie Tour

This tour is for the more adventurous foodie with more traditional Hong Kong food being featured. We met our guide Fiona in an MTR station which was convenient and proceeded to our first destination to have Hong Kong-Styled Milk Tea and a Pineapple Bun. The tea was very milky! The bun was freshly baked on site and still hot from the oven. It was fabulous!

On top is sugar and it’s called a Pineapple Bun due to the pattern the sugar makes on top. From there we went to try a Chinese style breakfast of Rice Rolls and then to a soy product shop to try a Tofu dessert. This tour also has six stops and the final three were a goose shop to try Roast Pork and Pork Knuckle, a cake shop to try Walnut Cookies and Almond Cookies and finally a noodle shop where we had Egg Noodles with Shrimp Roe. Once again the guide provided a good deal of Hong Kong history, we saw more food markets and visited shops such as those selling beads and other wares. The tour lasted 3.5 hours also and we saw a very different Hong Kong to the modern one on the previous tour.

Overall Thoughts

Hong Kong Foodie tasting tours are excellent walking tours of Hong Kong. The next time I visit I plan on taking the third tour which is indicative of how much I enjoyed it. Those unfamiliar with Chinese food would be best taking the Central and Sheung Wan tour as this is aimed more at people new to the cuisine. The Sham Shui Po tour is definitely for those who want to try something different as some of the food is fairly alien to a Western palate.

The guides are bubbly and friendly and certainly knowledgeable on both food and Hong Kong. You are able to see the kitchen and meet friendly owners and chefs along the way which adds a nice touch to the proceedings. The tours price at HK$720 (around €85 or US$95) which I think is good value for the amount of food you have, the professional guide and the selection of restaurants.
