Virgin Atlantic are introducing the Airbus A350-1000 later this year, which will replace their Airbus A340-600 and Boeing 747-400 aircraft. Rather than the Flying Lady adorning the nose, a new set of five Flying Icons will be used instead.
The reason for this is to focus on diversity and inclusion, even though all of them remain slim, youthful and scantily clad. With unusual names like Daley, Meera, Oscar, Rey and Zadie, they are certainly on brand for the British airline.
Meet The New Flying Icons
The graphics are all in keeping with the styling of the current Flying Lady, who is based on the pin-up girls made famous by Alberto Vargas in the 1930s and 1940s.
Flying Icons Video
There is a very short 15 second video on YouTube which essentially shows the five pictures that are presented above. I’m not entirely sure why it’s presented without sound, but here it is anyway.
It comes across a little bit like, “We need to cover YouTube as a social media channel too – whack something up!”. That could have been a little better.
Overall Thoughts
Virgin Atlantic are definitely the boutique airline across the Atlantic. Fans of the airline swear by the service and aesthetic and upgrading the fleet to much more fuel efficient aircraft should help the bottom line.
