The American Express Business Green Card now has a 150,000-Point Offer, as reported by The Points Guy (H/T).
You can earn up to 150,000 Membership Rewards (MR) Points after spending a total of $50,000 within the first three months. However, the $50,000 spend is limited to three categories: US Restaurants, hotels (booked directly with the hotel), and airlines (booked directly with the airline).
Furthermore, the Business Green Card has a $95 annual fee which is NOT waived the first year if you take the offer. Normally, the fee is waived the first year. This is a limited time offer that is starting today, September 12, 2019.
A Quick Overview of the Business Green Card
The Business Green Card is not impressive compared to most other MR-earning Amex cards, especially the Blue Business Plus. That’s because it earns just one point per dollar for all purchases. Another reason why it’s a terrible option is its normal sign-up bonus, which is worth a meager 5,000 MR points after your first purchase.
The Business Green Card is American Express’ original business card. That gives it membership in the Membership Rewards program, which gives cardholders access to over 20 hotel and airline partners. You will have a plethora of redemption options with the Business Green Card. But the best way to redeem MR points is to transfer them to airline partners.
Analysis
This is an interesting and unexpected offer from American Express because they appear to be revamping the personal Green Card. However, the Business Green Card needs some love too and this offer might be the first step in refreshing this verdant card.
But what about other Amex bonuses? Before applying for this offer, make sure that you have $50,000 worth of dining, hotel, and airfare expenses for your business. Most small businesses will not have that much in these specific expenses. Therefore, the offer is not worth it for those people.
Alternatives
The Business Platinum Card might be a better alternative for small and medium-sized businesses with varied expenses. The Business Platinum Card has a 100,000-point offer that can be yours after spending $25,000 within the first three months. There are no category restrictions for the minimum spend either, giving businesses more flexibility in what they can spend their money on.
Another alternative of value is the Chase Ink Business Preferred. This card is a great earner for small and medium sized-businesses that have high expenses within its categories. The Ink Business Preferred has a sign-up bonus worth 80,000 Ultimate Rewards (UR) points. And the best part is that you can earn that bonus by spending $5,000 within the first three months. That’s 10% of the Business Green Card’s spend requirement!
The Ink Business Preferred has a $95 annual fee (NOT waived the first year) just like the Green Card. But unlike the Green, it has more perks and valuable ways to redeem points. Therefore, the Ink Business Preferred is one of the best mid-tier alternatives to the Business Green Card.
Final Draw
The Amex Business Green Card is the original business credit card. But it’s a terrible option for most businesses given its earning structure and limiting offer. The Business Platinum Card is a better alternative for those who want a slew of MR points for half the spend requirement. Furthermore, there are no category restrictions and you will receive all of the perks that come with the Business Platinum Card too.
This offer is limited time and it ends on November 6, 2019.
