Problems at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas

Checked into the Mandalay Bay for a few days early in January.

Here are a few of the things that we were not happy with during this stay.

Check-in room number:

It started at check-in. Tried to check in with the mobile app but it went so slowly that I ended up getting to the desk before the app registered me.  At check-in I got my door cards for room 231.

From the elevator there is a central point that 3 hallways spiral out from. Well, after dragging my bag all the way down the hall to room 231 I found that the cards did not work. For some reason I thought I should look at the app, and found that my room was 321 not 231. The check-in clerk had written it wrong. So that meant dragging my cases back down the hall to the central point and the down the other hallway to my room number 321. Not fun when you are trying to drag the wheels of your cases over plush carpeting.

Ice machine:

I use a lot of ice during my stay so I popped out to get ice from the machine. I found that the spout where the ice comes from was faulty, but someone had removed the top from the machine so we could reach down into the machine and scoop ice out. Not the greatest but hey, at least I could get ice. The machine stayed like that all 5 days we were there. The hotel did put yellow bollards out as a warning that the floor might be wet and slippery but didn’t fix it.

Door sign:

I have a problem with the sign you put on your door handle to show that the room is occupied. It is quite a loose sign and I found that every time I opened the door the sign fell to the floor. I tried to open the door gently but it still fell a few times. I have stayed at hotels where the sign stays on the door under all movement so hopefully one day the Mandalay Bay changes signs.

By the way I stayed at MGM Grand right after Mandalay Bay and they have the same type of door signs, I guess because they are all under the same brand.

Hair in the shower:

One final thing. One of my friends was also staying at Mandalay Bay. He said that on the first day he noticed a whole clump of hair on the wall of the shower – after the room had been cleaned for check-in.

So he left a note for the person doing the room cleaning. That night he found the hair was still there !

So he called the front desk and reported the hair. They assured him it would be cleaned the next day. Of course when he got back to his room that next day, the hair was still on the wall. He said he was quite shocked by the lack of concern by the hotel.

Extras charge:

Oh and then at checkout there was a $16 charge on my account. You know when you see a cup and lid on the table you would think it is left there for you to have tea or coffee. Not in Las Vegas it isn’t. It seems even that shrink-wrapped cup and lid and creamer and sugar is not complimentary. A couple of dollars would be fine, but $16 !! Oh my gosh.

That was the start of the travel year for me. Not the worst problems but not great. It was my first time at the Mandalay Bay and I found the restaurants and casino to be enjoyable. The hotel is not as crowded as other hotels on the Strip because its position means that there is very little passing foot traffic. That is one of the main benefits of this hotel. Oh and it has a great pool complex – that wasn’t open because it is winter.

A pleasant stay but so many glitches. Hopefully the rest of the year goes better.
